MASON CITY – The city of Mason City took action against a landlord it has had in its crosshairs for some time.
Russ Hardy was served with 6 citations. You can read them below.
Mr. Hardy and other property owners have been under scrutiny as of late in Mason City, due to the condition and upkeep of their properties. The city wants action taken on some, and Mr. Hardy had a deal to supposedly satisfy requirements from city staff at some North End locations.

A wise man once said to me; “Peter do you know what makes a slum lord?” , I replied, “no what makes a slum lord?” “slum tenants” he replied.
This man owns over 100 houses not counting commercial property. Does he pay taxes? “Is the pope Catholic..” he employs close to 25 people, buys the best materials available when remodeling. Cut him some slack.
STOP LYING HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE GOTTEN SICK IN THEM HOMES TOO,,HE ONLY HAVE ADDICTS WORKING FOR HIM,,,
Russ has money and is a slum lord. Always has been and always will be. Nice guys but a slum lord. Fix your property up so those who are poor can live with some pride and dignity. Can’t stand the rich and elite. It’s time people for another revolution in this country. Poor, middle class and it don’t matter what color you are, let’s ban together and distribute the wealth that the top 1% has. Revolution!!
He looks like a Founding Father…Washington perhaps. A side profile to a coin.
What the hey, the cultural crescent looks like a junkyard too. Russ Hardy is just copying the downtown.
Well, maybe I stretched it little and maybe not it’s not quite that bad. But really, rocks and those goofy statues sitting all over the place.
Hey Russ,
Junk cars could be statues. Just sit them up on a big rock. Then you’ll be a ok.
Are these parcels rental houses or properties on the north end?
@Anonymous-I believe they are buildings. The old Pete’s Place and the Sandwich Store right next to Pete’s. Pete’s had a fire years ago and the back of the roof has all fallen in. The other building is the Old Alley Katz’s and it is in better shape as the previous owner had some city money and used it to fix the building. Hardy had money too but did nothing with it. At least that is what I heard.
@Anonymous-I was wrong about the buildings. It looks like these are the storage buildings he owns on South Monroe. He has turned them into junk yards.
I’m not a lawyer. What does this mean will happen if he fails to comply or get a variance? It seems like he would just be subject to continuing fines. Is there legal way that the property could be seized? Perhaps using “eminent domain?”
@Duh-I believe they can be seized under the city ordinance if they follow the proper steps. The problem is Hardy DOES pay a ton of property taxes and they know it. So, they are ready to put on a dog an pony show but never follow through. Been going on for 20 years now.
