FAYETTE COUNTY — A morning commute turned into a harrowing experience for Northern Iowa drivers Tuesday after a wrong-way truck reportedly narrowly avoided a head-on collision on a major highway. Fayette County Deputies were alerted to the danger at approximately 5:11 a.m. on April 21, 2026, following a string of frantic 911 calls regarding a red pickup truck near G Avenue and Highway 3.

Callers informed dispatchers that the vehicle was traveling down the wrong side of the road at slow speeds. According to witness reports, the truck had already nearly struck an oncoming vehicle head-on before law enforcement could arrive. While deputies were en route to the area, they received an update that the vehicle in question had pulled into a private residence located in the 14,000 block of Highway 3.

Upon arriving at the home, deputies located the red 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche and identified the driver as 56-year-old Kimberly L. Opfer of St. Olaf. After conducting an investigation into her condition and the earlier driving complaints, authorities placed Opfer under arrest.

Opfer (pictured at top) has been charged with Operating While Intoxicated (OWI), second offense, and driving on the wrong side of a two-way highway. She was transported to the Fayette County Jail, where she remains in custody pending an initial appearance before a judge or magistrate. No injuries were reported in connection with the incident.
