ALLISON, IA – Alberta Mae Opperman, a legendary figure in Iowa girls’ basketball and a longtime public servant, passed away on April 23, 2026, at the age of 93.
An Iowa woman whose athletic prowess earned her a spot in the Iowa Girls Basketball Hall of Fame in 1975, Alberta was a member of the 1951 State Championship team from Hansell High School. Her commitment to her community continued throughout her career, where she served as the Butler County Auditor until her retirement in 2000.
Alberta’s dedication was multifaceted; she simultaneously served as an EMT for the Allison Ambulance, a member of the Allison Fire Department, and a school board secretary. She was a lifelong member of the Allison Congregational Church and an avid golfer.
She is survived by her son, Todd Speedy; step-son, John Opperman; and a loving family of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
