MASON CITY – North Iowa Area Community College will offer a program on Alexander Hamilton and the Implied Powers of the Constitution on Wednesday, September 17, in Beem Center 200 on the NIACC campus from 3:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. This free public forum will be facilitated by Bennett Smith, history and political science instructor at NIACC, and will commemorate Constitution Day which is held on September 17 of each year.
This year’s program will examine the epic debate over the nature of the implied powers of the United States Constitution. This particular controversy arose over the First Bank of the United States and led to Alexander Hamilton’s famous opinion. Hamilton offered what has become the classic defense of a more expansive view of implied powers of the Constitution in this intellectual and political battle with Jefferson and Madison.
NIACC’s presentation of this forum complies with the federal law requiring every school that receives federal funds to provide students with a program on the Constitution. This program will be the tenth offered to NIACC students and the public. Free copies of the Constitution will also be given out. The Constitution Forum is offered to the public as well for no charge through NIACC’s Lifelong Learning Institute.
