COUNCIL BLUFFS — An Iowa man was killed Monday after his pickup was stopped in the traveled lanes of an Interstate highway and struck by a semi.

The fatal crash happened at 4:24 p.m. on May 25, 2026, on northbound Interstate 29 near mile marker 57.5, according to the Iowa State Patrol.

Investigators say a 2020 Ram 1500 driven by Donald G. Marks, 60, of Missouri Valley, Iowa, was stationary in the traveled portion of the right lane “for unknown reasons.”

A northbound 2014 Volvo semi, driven by Nilufar Makhmudova, 26, of Maineville, Ohio, then collided with the pickup.

Marks was pronounced deceased at the scene. His body was taken by Cutler-O’Neill Funeral Home.

The Iowa State Patrol report indicates Makhmudova was not injured. A passenger in the semi was transported by Council Bluffs Rescue to CHI Mercy in Council Bluffs with minor injuries.

Both vehicles were towed by Arrow Towing.

The semi was listed as being operated by S Ave Trucking, Inc., of Orland Park, Illinois. The report says no hazardous materials were involved.

The crash remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.
