Cops, FBI catch Iowa City bank robber

IOWA CITY – A man questioned by police and FBI agents within minutes of a daytime bank robbery in Iowa City admitted his involvement in the crime, plus another.

Iowa City police said that on August 4, 2014 at approximately 12:39 PM Officers responded to a report of a robbery at the Hills Bank located at 2621 Muscatine Avenue in Iowa City. Witnesses reported that a heavy set black male wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and mask had robbed the bank and left on foot. No gun was displayed during the robbery. Officers flooded the area and began interviewing witnesses. One of the witnesses reported seeing the male suspect running toward the Hy-Vee on First Avenue in Iowa City. Photos and surveillance video were used to identify a potential suspect.

Thirty-year-old Antoinne Eugene Davis was arrested later Monday by the Iowa City Police Department and charged with two counts of Robbery 2nd Degree (Class “C” felony) for his role in today’s robbery of the Hills Bank & Trust and the July 17 robbery of the University of Iowa Community Credit Union located at 2525 Muscatine Avenue. Witnesses to the robbery at Hills Bank as well as surveillance video provided officers with accurate suspect and suspect vehicle descriptions. The suspect vehicle occupied by Davis was stopped near the Iowa City Kmart a relatively short time after the robbery. Davis subsequently admitted his involvement to both robberies to police and FBI investigators.

The investigation continue and additional charges are likely.
