Chair of Senate Ed. Budget Subcommittee calls on Branstad to follow through on tuition freeze promise

Statement by Sen. Brian Schoenjahn of Arlington, chair of the Senate Education Budget Subcommittee –

Last summer, the Iowa Board of Regents made a promise to Iowans.

They said they would freeze tuition for Iowa students for a second year, IF the state would increase state support to UNI, ISU and the U of I by 4% AND provide UNI with an additional $4.4 million to address how an in-state tuition freeze affects that particular school.

Governor Branstad says he supports the tuition freeze idea. And that makes sense since it is being proposed by his own Board of Regents.

Senate Democrats called for a tuition freeze even before the Board of Regents made this offer.

We believe keeping college affordable will expand Iowa’s middle class and grow our economy. That’s why Senate Democrats VOTED FOR the tuition freeze agreement when we passed the Education Budget.

Yesterday, the Republican-controlled Iowa House voted AGAINST the tuition freeze.

The House Republican vote is an attempt to pit our universities against each other, pit Iowans against each other.

Governor Branstad, the tuition freeze is one of your top legislative priorities and it’s serious trouble.

Governor, today half of your weekly handout is focused on your administration’s various scandals.

You know those issues aren’t going to go away anytime soon.

It is time for you to focus on THIS session’s issues, on the issues that affect Iowans directly, starting with the tuition freeze.

You agree with Senate Democrats that the tuition freeze is a top priority.

We need you to join us in convincing House Republicans to do the right thing.

And that means agreeing to the Board of Regents’ offer to freeze tuition for a second year.

Thank you, Madam President.
