Should cities ban plastic bag use by retailers?

US_NEWS_PLASTICBAGS_2_FTNIT – Debate continues on a subject with strong opinions on each side: Should cities ban plastic bag use by retailers?

Those who favor the ban say that plastic bags are bad for the environment.

Those against the ban say that they re-use their plastic bags and that businesses should be free to use any type of bag they want.

Some businesses take the bags back; you can find the recyclable barrels at many local retailers. In January, 2010 a program began across Iowa to encourage grocery shoppers to recycle their plastic bags. The program is called “Build with Bags” and involved a two week promotional period along with the installation of plastic bag recycling barrels near the front of participating stores. This program is a cooperative initiative of the Iowa Grocery Industry Association, Keep Iowa Beautiful, Metro Waste Authority in Des Moines, Iowa Department of Natural Resources and The Des Moines Register. The main goals of the program are to double the amount of bags recycled in the next two years, to reduced plastic bag consumption, increase reusable bags use and to encourage the purchase of items made from recycled plastic to be used in parks and schools.

More and more shoppers elect to use the recycled cloth grocery bags.

What is your opinion, should plastic bags be banned for use by retailers or are current efforts to curb their use and recycle enough?

The plastic bags were a problem so they were made biodegradable. they were falling apart before they got to the car from the store. Grocery bags are the worst. They have tried improving them. No success as far as I am concerned. I don’t like seeing them in the ditches or caught on bushes, fences and suck. Give me the good old paper sack. Not the ones we have now. They tear much to easily.

…somebody mentioned making the plastic bags bio-degradable…many bags are already being made out of bio-degradable corn stalks…just thought you might want to know…!

LVS is all for government staying out of our lives. ER..well…except if you smoke cannabis inside your own home, then he wants a SWAT team wearing masks and jack boots to bust down your door and draw down on you with machine guns. Ya, he’s all for keeping government out of your lives.

I am for government staying out of our lives except for drug dealing, slimeball criminals like SUCKS. I can’t wait until the police catch up with him. I have saved every single thing he has ever posted about being a dealer and perverting young children. I will volunteer every bit of that information to the police.People like him make me sick to my stomach and I hope the lock him up so deep they have to feed him with a damn slingshot. Low life’s like him are only good for one thing and one thing only, target practice.

They make corn based, bio-degradable bags but they are more expensive and it’s all about the bottom dollar.

Those bags also need oxygen and sunlight to degrade. If they get burried in a landfill, they get neither.

Get reuseable bags and carry them with you. Think critically at the store about whether you really need your purchase in a bag. I rarely put my produce purchases on individual bags at the store since I prep it as soon as I get home. The Fareway checkers just bag them up with everything else. HyVee on the other hand bags all my produce up in individually if I don’t stop them. Ugh. I also had a checker at Best Buy tell me that I had to have my purchase in a bag.

To bad someone cant make a biodegradable plastic bag for the stores to use. You people are so against the government but this isn’t a government issue, think about you children and grandkids for heavens sake. We have way too much pollution in our country so why not make things so they will rot so it doesn’t harm our water supply. JUST A THOUGHT

We do not need the government telling us and the stores what to do. Most of the grocery stores have bins to put the used bags in and that is what we do with ours. Some people are just to damn lazy to use them.

I say no. For one thing we don’t need more government intervention. If it wasn’t for the people that discard them wherever, and let them blow in the wind, to get caught on every twig or weed, this wouldn’t be a problem. Most people don’t complain about things they don’t see.
