Six Mason City residents injured on I-35 in Franklin county

logo-iowa-state-patrolFRANKLIN COUNTY – Six people were injured Sunday afternoon while traveling north on Interstate 35 in Franklin county.

According to a report, all six person were from Mason City and traveling in a 2008 Chrysler Town and Country van at about 4 PM on Interstate 35 near the 167 mile marker.  The van slowed drastically due to extremely poor weather conditions.  After the van slowed, a trailing Hy-Vee semi-trailer rear-ended the van, sending it into the east ditch.

The driver of the van, 56-year-old Vicki Cole, was injured along with 5 passengers: Ramona Meade, age 59; Perjuana Short, age 13; Layla Alshara, age 11; Hannah Alshara, age 10; and Hujron Alshara, age 13.  The 61-year-old semi truck driver, Gregory Gwinn of Chariton,  was not injured.

All six persons were taken to Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.
