WASHINGTON – Military personnel and civilian workers received a 1% pay raise on Monday after President Obama signed an executive order adjusting certain rates of pay beginning in 2014.

Last week, Congress approved the pay raise for the military. A soldier’s basic pay is $18,194, not far above the U.S. poverty line. Federal civilian workers are getting their first pay increase since 2010.

Congress did not block the 1% pay increase proposed for 2014, as it had done in preventing a 0.5% increase in 2013.

According to the White House, military employees have received a raise every year that President Obama has been in office.

A 1% pay raise, but a cut in retirement benefits to help balance the budget. This should not happen to military people. Maybe our government should stop giving BILLIONS to other countries, just maybe that would help balance the budget, you think…

That’s not going to do squat when war mongers insist on policing the world for trillions.

The money they are so called saving from taking it from the military they are giving it to terrorists.

Where I agree that 1% is pretty much a insult, stating that $18,194 is their pay is somewhat misleading. Their food, living, medical, dental and clothing is supplied to them as well. That certainly ups their pay. Are they paid enough? I don’t think so but, I don’t care for misleading numbers either.

Just so you know, soldiers also have to pay for their own insurance, they take it out of their pay so take that 18.000 a year minus whatever tricare costs and that their takehome.

@maybe-I was under the impression that soldiers had free medical care from the military. Are you talking about dependent insurance and life insurance. If so, that is another subject. I can understand life insurance not being covered but I thought there was some kind of a fund for that too when it was combat related. Just asking. I certainly do not know all of the rules for military.

When I was in iraq we recieved money for housing, it depended upon your zip code but insurance was taken out of our pay. When we got back and were on leave we had to pay our insurance out of our pocket.

@maybe-what kind of insurance? Just for your dependents? I was always told that active duty military get free health care on base. If they wanted to go to a different doctor it was on them. Just asking is all.

I spent the last 12 years of my service in the guard, while on active duty Tricare was taken out of my check and that included dependents. While on a base we did have access to the TMC but off base thats where the insurance came in. It wasn’t as if we had a choice to have insurance or which company we wanted, we were told you will have it with tricare. If we wanted extra that was up to us.

@maybe-that sounds like the government dictating how you must live. Were you in Russia?

LVS, it sounds like how this Country is going. But you already know that.

@Annie-I guess I did know the answer to that. This is certainly not the country I grew up in anymore when even Putin says we are to socialist. I have been called a Republican but I am not. I was a Democrat until they went communist and am now what is called a Libratarian. I know that because I took a test and landed right smack in the middle of that classification. Basically it means I don’t like the government (or anyone else) telling me how to live my life. I vote Independent.

Our county supervisors got a larger raise than this.
