IOWA CITY – A University of Iowa senior wrestler has been charged with illegal hunting after police caught Ethan Lofthouse with a duck at his west side apartment he shot with a bow and arrow.
According to the Iowa Athletics Department, Senior Ethen Lofthouse was cited Friday for illegal hunting. Iowa City Police allege Lofthouse shot a duck outside his residence with a bow and arrow. It was reported that Lofthouse intended to eat the duck.
“The UI Athletics Department is aware of the situation, and is working with Lofthouse through the process outlined in the UI Athletics Department Student-Athlete Code of Conduct,” the department said in a statement Monday.
Last year, two Iowa wrestlers were accused of hunting rabbits inside the city. It was reported they were using slingshots and toy guns and had rabbit pelts inside their home.

It’s like blaming the gun for the killing of people, when in fact it’s the twisted mind that controlled the hand that squeezed the trigger. Things happen because people do them. And citizens feel they need something to blame because they are scared and helpless. It’s just like a weed. You can cut it off day after day, but until you kill the root, it’ll keep growing back. To find why people do things, you can’t attack the action, you have to find the reason for the action.
The problem is that these so-called educated athletes have no respect for the law and are already thumbing their noses at authority like professional athletes do. They think their elite athleticism entitles them to break rules and laws and get by with it. They need to be set straight and shown that the rules apply to them the same as everyone else.
This young man is from Utah, I think it is over the top that the police would go after him for this. In parts of Utah, hunting in town is common. I understand that doing it in town in not leagal in Iowa, but to do a press release on this as a big deal is stupid. Just as the shooting of the rabbit’s story was stupid. Urban rabbits, duck and geese are nothing but a problem for property owners.
