Meals available for hungry kids

MASON CITY – Summer is an exciting time for children to enjoy playtime with friends, a week at camp, a family vacation, or time at the pool. Unfortunately for many children who receive free and reduced-price meals at school, summer can mean hunger. Just as learning does not end when school lets out, neither does a child’s need for good nutrition.

Mason City Community Schools and the Mason City Ministerial Association are now providing free meals to children during the summer as part of the USDA Summer Food Service Program. This summer, meals will be served Monday through Friday at the following locations:

11:30 – 12:30 pm:

Our Saviors Lutheran Church, 2502 S Jefferson Ave. Gracious Estates Club House, 777 S Eisenhower Ave

12:00 – 1:00 pm:

Grace United Methodist Church, 200 14th NW Grace Evangelical Free Church, 400 N Illinois Ave

United Way of North Central Iowa is organizing activities for the kids to participate in while eating lunch. The Mason City Target will provide games, jump ropes, sidewalk chalk, and other activities as part of “Target Tuesdays”. If your organization or group would like to organize an activity or volunteer this summer, please contact United Way.

Additional summer feeding programs are across north central Iowa.

@Matt-yes, and we drove by Central Park today and those God awful, ugly dice are still there. When you think of the good uses the money that is wasted in this city could be used for it just makes you sick to see them. Also, they look terrible there. Makes you wonder if Robin Anderson has any taste at all.

cradle to grave. Government will care for you.

I don’t care if its the government or target or the ministry association, at least somebody stepped up and will help these kids. At the very least in this town and area we can keep a kid from going hungry no matter what their circumstances are at home. Its very easy to group these kids as the result of no account mothers, or government sponges. Remember one thing…..Its not the kids fault.

Kudos to Target for stepping up as well, I don’t see any other national corporation doing it.

This so sad for our town where jobs once was a area where you could find a job everyday. This area has been taken over by drugs and thugs and the mothers dont really care about their children like they did 20 years ago. “SAD VERY SAD” Its very nice that the churches and others are helping feed these children. You deserve a big THANK YOU. THANK YOU
