MASON CITY – The Humane Society of North Iowa is celebrating November as Adopt-A-Senior-Pet Month and encourages the public to consider adopting a senior animal as the next member of their family.
“Think of a pet that is already trained, doesn’t chew or scratch everything in sight — a pet who will love you unconditionally,” said Sybil Soukup, Executive Director of the Humane Society of North Iowa. “That’s what you get when you adopt a senior pet.”
Some worry that a senior pet comes with problems, but usually, a senior pet was once someone else’s beloved pet and has been released to the shelter because the owners were moving, could no longer afford a pet, or perhaps developed an allergy. Like most animals, a lot of senior pets end up in the shelter through no fault of their own, yet they are loving, healthy and make wonderful lifelong companions.
“A senior pet often has many years left to live and deserves to live them in a loving home, not in a shelter,” explained Soukup. “The Humane Society of North Iowa offers a reduced adoption fee on pets that are considered seniors: age 7 for dogs and age 10 for cats,” concluded Soukup.
During Adopt-A-Senior-Pet Month, take the opportunity to get acquainted with the older pets available at the Humane Society of North Iowa by visiting animals online or in person at the shelter.
