Op-ed: Council proves you don’t count (by Peter Children)

The council meeting of August 7th, 2012 should have driven home an important point; none of you count…not even a tiny bit.  You are living in a town without representation by not even one of your elected officials; and one more thing….running off at the mouth is not the cure, not even close.

The real truth here is that you and your wants and needs are less than zero; your false based hope for Lee & Kuhn ane as worthless as the paper you wipe your ass with.  Lee is and always was compromised by his wife’s job.  Kuhn……well that dog just won’t hunt; he’s an empty suit all hat and no cattle.

This city is being run by a group comprised of less than 2% of the population…you gave it all away when you stayed away on election day.  The majority of you who blogg suffer from severe diarrhea of the mouth,  talk is cheap but it will not change anything. The real power is at the voting booth and until you realize that you will be just where you are now until the cows come home. Why is it so hard to vote?  Eric and his ilk love you the way you are now and they are counting on you not to change, not ever.  Look at the people of Syria, 17,000 dead and many more will follow. All these people want to do is to be able to govern themselves….and that means being able to vote.  Less than 20% of qualified voters go to the polls….why?  Look long and hard at what that fact got us here in Mason City….and ask who is at fault.

Remember the famous quote; “Bad politicians are elected by good people who don’t vote.” Don’t you be one of them.

Now you will remember Max, Don & Jeff with more reverence.  It is very doubtful Robin would have had her way had these gentlemen been in those seats.  People don’t realize what they have until its gone.  Come next election clean house, vote.  Your city is only as good as it’selected oficials and we are at the bottom of the barrel with what we’ve got here, we can’t go further down.

Peter you are so right. I don’t go to the council meetings and get up and talk because I think I am going to change their minds. Come on know one is going to change their minds. When they come in on Tuesday they know how they are going to vote. I go and speak because I want them to know that they are not fooling everyone. I still can’t believe they say it wasn’t tax money. Kuhn said when he ran for council that he felt so many people felt that their are two different groups in this town the have and the have not’s so to speak will if that didn’t go on Tuesday night I don’t know what did. The North end is going to hell in a hand basket and the “glassy people” are getting there art. In less than 30 minutes robin gets thousands handed to her while the sanitation people are wondering if they are going to have jobs, it is just wrong.

It’s sad to say but I believe most of the people that blog on here don’t have the courage to vote. I think that’s obvious. I just don’t understand what they are scared of tho.

Well as a voter, one who does not depend upon camp made materials, I have that right to voice my opinion as needed.

Speaking here sometimes gives the reader more information about the issues, and reasoning behind those feelings. Which I believe is important today since we no longer have the luxury of all gathering at the town square and listen to our leaders [sic] or their detractors.

One other important factor which is why NIT is so important to the community is that we get not only sound clips, but oft times, the entire meeting or event to view at our leisure. To not only see what our elected officials say, but in what context it is said. I beleve the Founders of our country would approve.

Whether it is the pseudo-ranting of one Councilman about the merits of statues (he comes no wherenear winning an Oscar for the performance), or the disapproving facial expressions of the Chair whilst a citizen speaks.

Peter Children is correct in his feelings we need to all become more involved, and the biggest single thing we can do is to vote. It takes but mere minutes to do, and no more than a half hour of our valuable time.

That half hour by the way, is very reason unelected people do as they please because their friends in the Council will back them to the hilt.

You are wise in your words. We need the people that constantly complain to get off the couch and vote. I have always felt that if you don’t vote, you really got no room to bitch. Thanks for your comments.

I always vote. That’s why I have the right to bitch. Peter, this was nuts on the mark for an article. I stand behind you 150% on this one. Great words. Of course words are great when they are the TRUTH.

You are so right! I am so disappointed by the VERY LOW turnout numbers on local elections. WE (meaning most of the citizens of Mason City) are not currently represented. BUT we need to change that… VOTE the bums out!

Peter-I have voted in every election except one for the last 50 years and that year I was sick and had other things on my mind. Now, I have to admit I get frustrated some times and wonder if it is all worth it. I always supported Don, Jeff and Max because they supported the common taxpayers of this city. We are missing a lot by not having someone like them on the council. The elite have had their way this time and if people don’t get off their asses and vote next time they will have it again. Good article and you hit the nail right on the head this time.
