CLEAR LAKE – Clear Lake Police Chief Greg Peterson and his wife, Kathy, led the 2012 Classic Car Cruise around the Lake, Friday evening, in a 1958 Ford Squad Car.

Topping last year by approximately 100 cars, Clear Lake Police Chief Greg Peterson said, “We have about 800 cars in the Annual Old Car Cruise this year. We’re all out here to have a lot of fun.”

It was first come, first out. There was no particular class or year of car that the vehicles drove in.

The diversity was overwhelming. Uniqueness was everywhere. Dennis, from Mason City, who had just competed his 1916 Speedster a couple weeks before the cruise said, “I wanted it to look like a race car, although I’ve never raced it,” and Wil, from Belmond who talked about his window air-conditioner, “You add water to the cloth inside and it blows the cool air in through the window.”

There were new Corvette’s and the old Stingrays. The beautiful ’57 Fords and Chevy’s, and the ’32 Ford Coupe’s. The old Chevy Trucks vs the old Ford Trucks. The Monte Carlo’s that had significant body changes throughout the years, as well as the the Cameros, Firebirds and Trans Am. The Mustangs, Novas and Squad Cars; all brought back memories of earlier times.

One special car, the “Kool ’57” Ford, was resurrected this year. After a 18 year slumber, it peeked it’s grill out into the sunlight of the Cruise. It’s owners, Larry and Darlene Spear of Hampton, “She hasn’t been out for a drive in eighteen years. After $3000 to get her started and street legal, she’s on the road again.” This is the car that we were in taking pictures, and the “Kool ’57” got lots of thumbs-up, rated a 10 and brought many smiles from people that liked the style of the Low Rider. We even heard, a couple times, “Larry’s back”, “There’s the Kool ’57” and “Hey Spear, nice to see you back.”

The beauty of each individual car and the pride of the owner shows in the pictures. From a difference perspective, the pictures were taken from riding in the cruise and not just watching. The crowds were delighted to get there picture taken and NIT welcomes you to look and see if you and your family happened to have been caught in one of them. The people were as unique as the cars and fun to see.

Loved the story and the pictures. That was a lot of cars!! Really enjoyed the pictures because my aunt and uncle were in some of them. It’s always fun to see pictures of family back when I’m so far away! Thanks Jody and Kelly!
