Women’s golf: All three Trojans improve position at NJCAA Nationals

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – All three NIACC women’s golfers improved their positions in day two of the NJCAA Women’s National Golf Tournament on Tuesday.

Freshman Mikayla Smith (Mason City, IA) had the biggest jump, climbing from 64th to tie for 47th overall by shooting an 85 in the second round. She is at 178 strokes after two days of competition.

“Mikayla really played well today,” said NIACC coach Chris Frenz. “She drove the ball much better and put herself in a position to score.  I think she’ll be just more comfortable each day with the course and her ability to score on it.”

Alexandria Eckenrod (Fr., Mason City, IA) shot an 88 to move up six spots from 55th to a tie for 49th with a total of 179 strokes.  Sarah Steinauer (Fr., Clarinda, IA) moved up five spots to tie for 73rd with a round of 98 on day two.  Steinauer has 195 strokes in the tournament.

“All the girls are playing their hearts out and I’m very proud with how they are representing themselves and NIACC here at the national tournament,” said Frenz.  “We’ll go at it again tomorrow afternoon, and hopefully move up some more.  That’s our goal, keep moving up the leaderboard.”

The Trojans will hit the links at LPGA International Golf Course again Wednesday for day three of the tournament.

Smith – 93-85=178 (T-47)
Eckenrod – 91-88=179 (T-49)
Steinauer – 97-98=195 (T-73)
