Opinion: Fun stuff and not so fun stuff by Max Weaver

Well folks it has been great so far, thanks to NorthIowaToday.com and it’s social network.

Sources tell me John Lee, “the man of action,” ears are ringin’ and his pants are on fire. Welcome to my world, John. He is about to publish “the truth” as John Lee sees it. I wonder if he has the guts to do it here, on NorthIowaToday.com? Or, will he do the typical “guest editorial” at the Globe Gazette. Big difference.

Give it your best shot, John. Try not to make it about Councilman Weaver. Just stick to the facts, if you can.

The subject of the shot clock or the “timer” at Council meetings was brought up in the blog posts under my last story. It’s Mayor Bookmeyer’s best friend. It plays like the seventh Council member. I am very against it. It is all about the Mayor’s control, discipline and decorum, which none of the above belong in a true democracy.

The City has $70 + million budget. It ain’t like going to the corner store for a Power Ball and cigs. That takes about 5 minutes too. We make million-dollar decisions, hopefully not million-dollar mistakes. The timer should go. It impedes Council communication. The bottom line is, what is the Mayor afraid of?

On a more serious note, it is budget and goal-setting season at City Hall. Please, let your Mayor and Council members know how you want your money spent. And, what you want it spent on. I.E., jobs, job creation, multi-purpose arena, bike trails, infrastructure, safety, etcetera. Give us some good feedback, it is your money.

Next time, we will talk about the John Skipper incident and the intimidating phone call I received from the Globe Gazette. Also, Mayor Bookmeyer’s office. Why is it off-limits? What is he hiding in there?

Maybe, next time.

Thank you. Blog away.

There will be a goal setting session held on Monday, November 29 at 5:00 pm in the Board Room at the Mason City Public Library. The Mayor and the Council will be in attendance. Citizens are encouraged to attend. Also, I would like our readers to feel free to leave suggestions for the Mayor/Council in the story comment section below.
