Sofia (Lopez) Benedict was born in Sinton, Texas on December 10, 1967 to Elias Lopez and Delia Trevino. She passed away at her home in rural Graettinger, Iowa on March 31, 2026 at the age of 58.
Sofia earned her associates degree in medical transcription. In December of 1990, she was united in marriage to Marc Benedict. The couple lived in Texas, when they welcomed their son Zachariah Glenn Benedict in 1993. Shortly after he was born, Marc was offered a teaching position in Iowa and the family relocated back to Marc’s home state. They made their home in Graettinger, where both Sofia and Marc worked at the Graettinger – Terril School district. Sofia was an aide and helped in the school office.
Sofia enjoyed the arts. She enjoyed being crafty, doing puzzles, and coloring. She also liked to watch drama TV shows and movies. Sofia will be remembered as a kind soul, who enjoyed helping others when she could. She found great companionship in her pet cats.
Sofia will be lovingly remembered by her son Zach (Allison) Benedict of O’Fallon, MO; her mother, Delia (Ermilo) Galindo; her brother Rene T Lopez and his partner William D. Craig Jr.; her father-in-law Russell Benedict; Marc’s siblings Mike (Susan) Benedict, Jim (Kathy) Benedict, and Bob Benedict; her brother-in-law Dave Hepker; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marc Benedict, her infant son Alexander Levi Benedict, and her father, Elias Lopez.
