DES MOINES – A new study reveals that Iowa has the sixth highest child maltreatment rate between 2019 and 2023.

The research by personal injury lawyers H&P Law analyzed child maltreatment data from all 50 U.S. states between 2019 and 2023, sourced from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. By evaluating average maltreatment cases per 1,000 children, the study identifies the states most affected by potential medical malpractice in child welfare.

Iowa ranks sixth with an annual average of 15.12 cases per 1,000 children, 71.8% above the national average of 8.8. Between 2019 and 2023, the state’s rate fluctuated between 14.3 and 16 cases per 1,000 children.

Looking at the study, a spokesperson from H&P Law commented,

“The high rates of child maltreatment in Iowa raise serious concerns about the adequacy of child welfare systems. Further, the long-term impact on children can be devastating, both physically and emotionally.”

“To address these issues, states must invest in stronger child protection protocols, ensure proper medical oversight, and improve coordination between healthcare providers and child welfare agencies.”

“Enhanced training, stricter reporting requirements, and comprehensive investigations could significantly reduce maltreatment rates and protect vulnerable children.”

Methodology

This research analyzed child maltreatment data from 2019 to 2023, comparing the data of all 50 U.S. states using information from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. By examining state populations alongside respective maltreatment rates per 1,000 children, the study identified the states with the highest frequency of child maltreatment cases linked to potential medical malpractice in child welfare.
