Colorado man killed, Northern Iowa man hurt in head-on collision

RURAL POCAHONTAS COUNTY, IOWA – A Colorado man’s vehicle veered into the oncoming lane on this rural Northern Iowa highway, causing a head-on collision with another vehicle and costing him his life.

On August 7, 2025, at 12:02 PM, the Pocahontas County sheriff’s office received multiple 911 calls in reference to a head-on collision at the 60000 block of 220th avenue / Iowa State Highway 4.

Upon arrival, deputies located one of the drivers deceased, entrapped in their motor vehicle, a black 2005 Subaru Impreza. The deceased person was identified as 31-year-old Darwin Benjamin Rosales Castillo of Westminster, Colorado. According to an Iowa State Patrol crash report, the victim was not wearing a seat belt.

The other driver, operating a white 2024 Ford Explorer, received minor injuries and was examined and released by ambulance staff. The name of the injured driver was identified as 65-year-old Ronald Meyer of Pocahontas, Iowa.

No other injuries were reported.

The investigation is ongoing by the Iowa State patrol. According to their report, the Subaru crossed the center line of Highway 4 while northbound and struck the Explorer, head-on.

Agencies responding to this incident included the Pocahontas County sheriff’s office, the Iowa State patrol, the Pocahontas Police department, Pocahontas ambulance, Pocahontas fire department, Palmer ambulance, and Palmer fire department.
