MASON CITY – Major cell phone service provider US Cellular is set to layoff at least 9 workers in Mason City, and hundreds more across Iowa, after T-Mobile acquisition.
US Cellular, located at 402 Indianhead Drive in Mason City, will shed the workers beginning on June 2.
Across Iowa, up to 500 or more workers will be let go. Cedar Rapids will be the hardest hit, losing over 200 workers.
Across the country, up to 4,100 others will be losing their jobs, too.

T-Mobile has acquired the wireless services of US Cellular, reportedly, prompting the action. On May 28, T-Mobile and US Cellular announced that T-Mobile has agreed to acquire substantially all of US Cellular’s wireless operations. This includes US Cellular’s wireless customers and stores, as well as certain specified spectrum assets.
“Upon closing, T-Mobile’s leading 5G network will expand to provide millions of UScellular customers, particularly those in underserved rural areas, a superior connectivity experience, moving from a roaming experience outside of the UScellular coverage area to full nationwide access on the country’s largest and fastest 5G network,” T-Mobile claimed.
There is a T-Mobile store in Mason City, located at 2114 4th Street SW.
