CLEAR LAKE – Alliant Energy held a public forum in Clear Lake on election night to hear feedback on their proposed big rate increase.
Alliant Energy’s Interstate Power and Light Company (IPL) filed an application (petition) with the Iowa Utilities Board (IUB) on October 12, 2023, seeking an increase in its electric and natural gas base rates. The utility is requesting:
An increase in electric service revenue of $284 million, or approximately 16 percent above their existing electric revenue requirement.
An increase in natural gas service revenue of approximately $14 million, or 5 percent above their existing gas revenue requirement.
If approved by the Iowa Utilities Board, Alliant’s proposed rate adjustment would add:
– About $10 per month to the average residential electric customer’s bill beginning in October 2024, and about $7 per month beginning in October 2025.
– About $3 per month to the average residential gas customer’s bill beginning in October 2024.
Alliant graciously held a public forum at 6 PM on election night, Tuesday, November 7, 2023, inside the Surf Ballroom.
About 60 people attended the meeting and were able to address a few Alliant Energy reps seating in front of them.

According to Cerro Gordo County Supervisor Chris Watts, in attendance that night and engaged the Alliant board, “their franchise agreement will be running out in the next few years with the city of Mason City. It’s up to the city… MidAmerican energy services a lot of communities in North Iowa. They are 53% cheaper than a alliant energy. Imagine your bill being half of what it is now? John Larson, the CEO, makes a $7.29 million yearly compensation package.”
Following consumer comment meetings, a scheduling conference will be set for the parties to determine the procedural schedule, which will include a hearing date. The IUB will issue an order providing applicable due dates and deadlines. Iowa law sets timeframes for this type of proceeding. A final decision is generally rendered within ten months after the rate case application filing date.
