DES MOINES – The Republican-dominated Iowa Legislature convened the 91st General Assembly this morning at 10 AM.
The Iowa Senate has 50 members and is controlled 35-15 (a gain of 1 for Republicans from 2024) in favor of Republicans. The Iowa House has 100 members and is controlled 67-33 (a gain of 3 for Republicans from 2024) in favor of Republicans. Bills are introduced in either chamber, typically in a committee, then passed on to the Senator or House for consideration. If the bill passes, the other chamber must consider the bill, sometimes leading to compromises or changes before a final vote. If the bill ultimately passes the House and Senate, Republican Governor Kim Reynolds may then sign it into law.
On Monday, January 13, 2025, the 2025 Session of the 91st General Assembly convened at 10:02 a.m. with the following activities:
Republicans will be looking to cut real estate taxes as the legislative session moves forward over the next several weeks. Likely, social issues will be at the top of their agenda, as they firmly control most of what will take place in the Capitol. As in 2024, Democrats are relegated to playing defense and criticizing the Republicans on a range of issues, including gun control, abortion, filthy Iowa air and water, and watching Republicans worship Donald Trump. Already, the Iowa GOP made headlines when a legislator introduced the idea of buying the southern-most 9 counties in Minnesota and adding them to Iowa.
Next, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds will deliver her 2025 Condition of the State address on Tuesday.
