Darlene Ann Tobey, 72 of Waukee, IA, passed away on Saturday, October 19, 2024 surrounded by her family.

A memorial service for Darlene will be held at 4:00 PM on Saturday, November 2, 2024 at Schott Funeral Home – 505 N. Clark St. Forest City, IA 50436.

Visitation will begin at 2:00 PM at the funeral home that afternoon and will continue until the time of the service.

Private family burial will take place in Oakland Cemetery, Forest City, IA.

Darlene was born on March 28, 1952, to Rudolph and Viola (Westfahl) Borchert in Neenah, WI. Her family then moved to New Richland, MN, where she graduated high school.

On June 17, 1972, she was united in marriage to her best friend and high school sweetheart, Richard Tobey at the First Lutheran Church in Waldorf, MN. She and Richard settled in Forest City, IA, where they raised their three children.

Darlene’s greatest joys were her children and grandchildren. She was proud to brag about them at every opportunity. When physically able, she enjoyed planting and tending to her flowers, sewing, cross stitch, entertaining family and friends, and attending her children and grandchildren’s activities. As her health declined, she found comfort in music, her shows (most notably Breaking Bad), cards and gossip with her friends at Thomas Place, and live streaming those family activities.

She is survived by her children, Erin (Erik) Nelson of Marion, IA, Josh (Heather) Tobey of Cumming, IA, and Nate (Hilary) Tobey of Ankeny, IA, grandchildren Elena, Jack, Landry, Violet, Sage and Wes, sisters Deb (Steve) Massey of Sauk Centre, MN, Diane (Elroy) Boelter of Mankato, MN, sister in law May Borchert of Waseca, MN, brother in law Rudy Scheibel of Forest City, IA, along with many cherished nieces and nephews.

In death she is reunited with her husband Richard, her parents, sister Donna Boelter, brother Roger Borchert, beloved nephew Jeff Boelter, and dear sisters in-law Bonnie Scheibel and Ada Hill.

The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dori, Erin, Heidi, Andrea and the entire staff of WesleyLife Hospice for their loving and thoughtful care of Darlene and family these last several weeks.

Despite far too much grief and pain in this life, Darlene remained fiercely loyal, stubborn and independent. In lieu of donations, her family asks you to consider supporting those people, organizations or programs that work to ensure those struggling with pain, loss, or disability can live comfortably and independently.
