OBIT: Kimberly Sue Swanson

Kimberly Swanson, age 62, of rural Northwood, IA, passed away surrounded by family at her home on Monday, October 21, 2024.

Visitation for Kim will be from 1:00-3:00 PM on Sunday, October 27, 2024 at Schott Funeral Homes – Mittelstadt Chapel in Lake Mills, IA.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, October 28, 2024 at Silver Lake Lutheran Church, with Pastor Randy Baldwin officiating. Inurnment will follow the service at Silver Lake Lutheran Cemetery.

Kimberly Sue (Thompson) was born on December 10, 1961, in Albert Lea, MN to parents Siram and Beulah (Ashpole) Thompson. She grew up on a dairy farm in the Silver Lake area. Kimberly attended and graduated from Lake Mills High School. Kim was a lifetime member of Silver Lake Lutheran Church, being baptized, confirmed, and married there.

On November 21, 1981, Kim was united in marriage to Daniel Swanson at the Silver Lake Lutheran Church. The couple began dating when Kim was 14 years old, and had been inseparable ever since. To this union, two children were born, Brooke and Derek.

Kim worked at the Lake Mills Care Center while still in high school. Kim began working at Fleetguard in Lake Mills in 1983, and continued working there until 2011. From there, she worked as a nurse’s assistant at Mayo Clinic in Albert Lea, first in Medical Surgery, later in Sterile Processing. She continued working at mayo until 2022, when her health forced her to retire.

Some of Kim’s favorite hobbies included: reading, gardening, camping, and spending time with her family and friends. Kim was a very important part in her grandchildren’s lives, and she cherished every moment spent with them.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Swanson; father, Si Thompson; grandparents, Selmer and Mable Thompson, Russell and Jeanette Ashpole, and Eldora Fink Ashpole; father in-law, David Swanson; and a sister in-law, Kathy Bakken.

Surviving members of her family include her mother, Beulah Thompson; daughter, Brooke Swanson and her children, Caleb, Tasha and Jaden; son, Derek (Jamie) Swanson and their children, Daven and Daniel; siblings, Angie (Steve) Hannegrefs, Scott Thompson, and Jason (Laura) Thompson; mother in-law, Olive (Vernon) Schroeder; sister in-law, Connie (Howard) Honsey; brother in-law, Dan Bakken; mother in-law, Joyce Swanson; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and a lot of great friends.
