MASON CITY, Iowa, September 4, 2024— During the 2024 Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Fill the Boot campaign, the members of the Mason City Firefighters Local 41 took to the streets and continued a 70-year tradition of raising funds to support MDA’s mission to accelerate research, advance care, and advocate for the support of families living with muscular dystrophy, ALS, and related neuromuscular diseases.

“The fire fighters of Mason City have once again gone above and beyond for MDA’s families during this year’s Fill the Boot campaign,” said Neil Maki, President of the Mason City Firefighters Local 41. “They spent many hours over the four days in between calls and other activities on the street with boots in hand, and a smile on their face. This was our second highest amount ever raised. We unfortunately don’t have amounts donated for the years prior to 2008, but since that time, we have raised over
$165,000 for the MDA.”

“The fire fighters of Mason City Local 41 have gone above and beyond for MDA’s families during this year’s Fill the Boot campaign,” said MDA Fire Fighter Partnership Rep. Julie Albert. “We are so grateful for their dedication and for the generosity of those in the Mason City community who have helped to raise critical funds for research and care, as we mark this historic milestone in our partnership with MDA.”

Funds raised through the Mason City Firefighters Fill the Boot event go towards groundbreaking research, life-enhancing educational programs, a resource center, and support for multi-disciplinary medical teams at the MDA Care Center at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. They have also helped send 50 kids from Iowa to MDA Summer Camp – all at no cost to families this last year.
