Douglas Fiske, 98, of Iowa Falls, passed away on Thursday, July 25, 2024 at Scenic Manor in Iowa Falls. A private burial will be held. Funeral arrangements are under the guidance of the Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls.
Douglas Androus Fiske Jr. was born May 10th, 1926 in Georgia. He lived with his parents on Lake Harriet in Minneapolis. His Dad was a lawyer with his own law practice on Nicollet Avenue, downtown Minneapolis. His Mom wrote for the Minneapolis Tribune as a writer and also wrote screenplays. Doug and his Mom moved back to Iowa Falls when he was quite small as she thought small town life was a better place to raise a young boy.
Doug graduated from Iowa Falls High School and the Teachers College in Cedar Falls, no matter how hard his Mom tried she couldn’t get him out of the garage with his greasy hands and clothes into dress clothes. Doug had the love of any engine and more talent than anyone in the area. He loved to work on cars, trucks, semi’s, motorcycles and small gas engines. There was nothing he couldn’t fix until in his words the “new fangled stuff” came to be. In fact he built his own car to drive around the yard with his friends at the age of 10.
Doug tried many jobs. Some being a Police Officer for Iowa Falls, he worked for the Honda dealership in Iowa Falls, and drove and maintained the bus for Ellsworth College. His true love was working in his shop tinkering on anything he could get his hands on. He also loved to travel and put many miles on his red Mercedes. He could solve any math problem faster than doing it on a computer. He did what he wanted and at his convenience.
Doug also loved to take chances, like riding his motorcycle through a wall of fire. Doug was not a man of many words….unless you got him talking about anything with an engine.
Doug married JoAnn Brones June 12, 1987 at the top of the 30 foot observation tower in Pilot Knob State Park,( where he had proposed many years earlier) Forest City at sunset.
Doug’s pride and joy was his son Jordon (named after one of his antique cars). As Jordon got older he loved riding bicycles. he convinced his Dad to ride too, Jordon and Doug rode all over Iowa Falls. Doug was still riding after the age of 90!
Doug was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife JoAnn, Forest City, his son Jordon Fiske, Minneapolis, his daughter Becky (Wayne) Embree, Anamosa, IA. Stepsons, Bill Starr, Forest City, Jarrod (Carie) Starr, Thornville, Ohio, Shaun ( Ashley) Brones, Forest City, Lance Brones, Viginia Beach, Virginia. Step grandchildren Abby (Braig), Lillith, Bailey, Noah, Trinity, Averie and Aspen.
