OBIT: Gary Theesfeld

Gary attended Estherville High School and went on to serve in the Army’s Blackhorse Regiment during the Vietnam War.

Gary John Theesfeld was born on June 20, 1950, in Estherville, Iowa to John and Dorothy (Spear) Theesfeld. He passed away on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at The Cottage Hospice House in Luverne, Minnesota at the age of 73. Throughout his battle with cancer, he showed courage and strength, but never lost his sense of humor.

Gary attended Estherville High School and went on to serve in the Army’s Blackhorse Regiment during the Vietnam War. He later worked at Berkley, Donavan Motors, and Motor Inn, but ultimately started his own business simply named Gary’s Painting. He worked 30 years as a painting contractor where he held contracts with Casey’s General Stores and the City of Luverne, as well as painting thousands of homes and businesses. He was very good at what he did and turned many customers into friends along the way.

He loved to watch racing, both NASCAR and local raceways, he even drove the pace car at the Fairmont Speedway. He enjoyed keeping a nice car, grilling out, and watching old westerns. He was a generous man and loved spoiling his grandchildren from time to time. He was quick to crack a joke and didn’t mind looking silly if it got him a laugh. His humor will be greatly missed.

Gary is survived by his children Tina (Tim) Skrepak of Estherville, Tom (Tanya) Theesfeld of Albert Lea, Tim Theesfeld of Okoboji, and Kelsey Theesfeld of Sioux Falls; six grandchildren, Austin (Melissa) Skrepak, Ashley Skrepak, Avery Skrepak, Alijah Skrepak, Payton Theesfeld, and Paxton Theesfeld; and one great-grandchild Samuel Skrepak. He is also survived by his siblings Don Theesfeld of Algona and Dorothy Rosa of Fairmont; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.

Gary is preceded in death by his parents John and Dorothy (Spear) Theesfeld, infant brother John Allen Theesfeld, sister-in-law Marlene Theesfeld, and brother-in-law Ray Rosa.
