MASON CITY – What was once a dilapidated, unsightly wilderness in downtown Mason City will now be the home to many new residents after a ribbon-cutting ceremony officially opened the brand new River II apartments to new tenants.

The ceremony was held Wednesday, in front of the main entrance to the shiny new homestead on 2nd Street SW, built by Talon Development.

City Hall said in a statement, “Congratulations to The River Mason City on the ribbon cutting at The River II earlier today! Check out their upcoming open houses to experience modern, luxurious living with a variety of floor plans and great amenities available.”

This new apartment building compliments the first one across the street, built a few years back. Both have changed the look of the near-downtown area, taking once-vacant run-down areas and making them vibrant areas full of new residents. Both offer Studio, 1, 2, and 3 bedroom apartments and 2 and 3 bedroom townhomes. This new community is pet friendly, located near many area attractions like Southbridge Mall and it’s new multi-purpose arena.

Downtown will soon benefit from a new multi-million dollar project to install a new trail and recreation system along Willow Creek, which runs next to both apartment buildings. Also coming soon is a new 36-unit apartment building a few block north on North Delaware Avenue.  This project and possibly future ones are benefitting from a $500,000 federal grant to make sure areas for development are environmentally sound.

Mason City seems to have come to a realization that in order for the downtown to thrive, people actually need to live in this core area.
