Local students honored at Waldorf College Honors Day

waldorf-college-tuition-freezeFOREST CITY – On April 2, Waldorf College students, faculty, staff and alumni came together to celebrate the annual Honors Day. Nearly 230 scholarships were distributed to Waldorf students, providing $368,817 in financial aid.

Following are local student recipients honored at the event:

Forest City, Iowa
Thomas O’Rourke received the Robert G. Anderson Memorial Scholarship and the Esther Ronken Lingren Scholarship. The Robert G. Anderson Memorial Scholarship award is given annually to a new or returning freshman that is a golfer based on academics and Christian character. Preference will be given to graduates from Forest City or Lake Mills schools. The Esther Ronken Lingren Scholarship is awarded to a student planning a career in education who demonstrates scholastic ability.

Anthony Blomme received the Roger C. Anderson Memorial Scholarship. The award is given to a student on the basis of Christian character who has an interest in a vocation demonstrating a life of service to others. Preference will be given to graduates from the Forest City or Lake Mills Schools. Blomme also received the History Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded annually to to students majoring in History, with a preference given to those interested in material culture or museums.

Rachel Fischer received the Frank and Anna Banta Endowed Scholarship. This scholarship was established in 1994 and is awarded to a student form the Buffalo Township or Winnebago County. Fischer also received the Erling Haugo Memorial Scholarship Fund. This endowed scholarship will be awarded to students from Winnebago or Worth counties based on academic achievement and unique talents or gifts.

Reid Gilbertson received the Dale and Agnes Hagen Scholarship. This endowed scholarship is awarded to a Lutheran student from Iowa majoring in business or education. Gilbertson also received the Immanuel Lutheran-Burton Smith Memorial Award, which is given to a returning sophomore annually on the basis of character, religious leadership and scholarship. Gilbertson was also honored as a member of the Alpha Chi honors society.

Jeannine Fix received the Erling Haugo Memorial Scholarship Fund. This endowed scholarship will be awarded to students from Winnebago or Worth counties based on academic achievement and unique talents or gifts.

Rochelle Dirks received the Erling Haugo Memorial Scholarship Fund and the J.D. Mangan Scholarship. The Erling Haugo Memorial Scholarship Fund is awarded to students from Winnebago or Worth counties based on academic achievement and unique talents or gifts. The J.D. Mangan Scholarship is awarded to a student who has shown outstanding performance in their high school studies or in their first year studies at Waldorf, and who are participants and represent Waldorf College on its athletic teams, with special consideration and attention given to academic achievement, integrity, high moral character and leadership qualities.

Kelsey Sollish received The Hubert and Daisy Cormaney Hill Endowed Scholarship. Their daughter, Dr. Ann Hill Duin and her husband, Pastor Doug D. Duin, established the scholarship in 2006. Hubert and Ann ’75 both served on the Waldorf Board of Regents for many years. This scholarship will be awarded to high-achieving students.

Nicholas Grothe received the Peter A. Hillesland Memorial Scholarship. Maxine Hillesland established this scholarship in 1996 in memory of her husband. The scholarship is awarded based on Christian character.

Rachel Jordahl received the Standford and Ruth Holtan Endowed Scholarship Fund. It is awarded to a student from Forest City or North Iowa who exhibits a high ability in math or music.

Ethan Retland received the Genevieve Stelberg Memorial Scholarship. It is awarded to students selected on basis of personal motivation and character.

Evan Eischen received The Seth Wooldridge Endowed Memorial Scholarship. Jesse Olson, Seth Wooldridge, friend and classmate, established this scholarship in memory of Seth, who passed away during his high school years and never had the chance to attend college. This scholarship is intended to help dozens of future students received the education that Seth never had the chance to receive. It is awarded to a student living in the Forest City area.

Garner, Iowa
Rachel Lynch received the Ken and Joan Hansen Scholarship. It is awarded to a returning student majoring in English, Speech, or Theatre. Lynch also received the Helen Prestegaard Lipp Scholarship. William Lipp established this scholarship in 2003 in memory of his wife, Helen, who graduated from Waldorf in 1933 and also taught English and German at the college. This scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in English or German with academic achievement.

Heath Hutcheson received The Dr. Richard Baur Memorial Scholarship. It is awarded to a Lutheran student majoring in religion or history with academic achievement. Hutcheson also received the Verna and Harry Reynolds Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to incoming freshmen or returning freshman who are interested in education, political science, or English-based academics. Any unused funds may be awarded on the basis of academics to students interested in other occupations.

Rick Young received the Lynn and Rosalie Juhl Educational Scholarship. It is awarded to a student from Iowa with demonstrated academic ability and a strong work ethic. Special consideration is given to math, science, or education students who express interest in international organizations such as Peace Crops.

Zachary Buseman received the Velma Severson Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship was established in 2013 to honor Velma who faithfully served the students, faculty, staff and guests of Waldorf College for 42 years. Her wit, gracious hospitality, and vital spirit were legendary – and she always served everyone with a twinkle in her eye. This scholarship is awarded to a student who comes from an agricultural or rural area.

Britt, Iowa
Maggie Eden received the Bill Hamm Scholarship. This annually funded scholarship is awarded to a student of unparalleled academic excellence who demonstrates a commitment to international affairs or politics.

Clarion, Iowa
Jenna Tegtmeyer received the Herb and Cathy Ihle Scholarship. Awards will be given to students demonstrating good character in each of the following: BA in business, BA in communications, church vocation, and choir. Tegtmeyer was also honored as a member of the Alpha Chi honors society.

Clear Lake, Iowa
Michael Keeran received the Class of 1948 Scholarship. The available interest will provide one or more scholarships to returning sophomores who demonstrate academic achievements and leadership.

Sara Barlow received the Verna and Harry Reynolds Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to incoming freshmen or returning freshman who are interested in education, political science, or English-based academics. Any unused funds may be awarded on the basis of academics to students interested in other occupations.

Adam Buehler of Clear Lake, Iowa, received the Donald and Charlotte Anderson Scholarship. The scholarship is to be awarded to students from Kossuth, Winnebago, Hancock, Cerro Gordo, or Worth counties who demonstrate leadership qualities.

Chase Crosby received the Elaine Anderson Memorial Award. It is awarded to a student with a disability or to a sophomore with high scholarship and Christian character. Crosby also received the Brian and Lorae Current Scholarship.

Kristen Hewett received the Walter and Evelyn Bergland Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a returning student based on Christian character.

Mason City, Iowa
Jennifer Nelsen received the Sanford and Kathryn Haugen Scholarship. It is awarded annually to a returning sophomore student who has demonstrated a proven record of ability in the classroom.

Derrick Barnes received the Ronald and Darlene Groe Scholarship. It is awarded to Christian students from North Central Iowa who show academic promise and have demonstrated a determination to succeed.

Emily Kaune received the Archie Stockseth Scholarship. It is awarded to students who are personally motivated, of good character, and have displayed academic achievement.

Audrey Sparks received the Mary Ella Wiese Memorial Scholarship. It is awarded to a student who participates in varsity golf, studio art and/or takes theatre classes.

Charles City
Christian Weber received the Hans and Grace Olson Memorial Scholarship. The proceeds from the trust are awarded to members of Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Calamus, Iowa. If there are no students from this church attending, it is awarded to a deserving student.

Osage, Iowa
Lisa Moss received the Buzz Burnham Scholarship. This scholarship was established in 2013 by family and friends of Buzz in honor of his 92nd birthday and recognition for all that he has done for Waldorf College. Buzz is a ’41 Waldorf graduate and has served in several volunteer capacities at the college. This scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in education with academic achievement. Moss was also honored as a member of the Alpha Chi honors society.

Manly, Iowa
Jonathan Overy received the Oscar and Esther Lyders Choral Music Scholarship. Dr. Oscar Lyders was founder and director of the Waldorf College Choir, and Esther was also a member of the faculty. William and Phyllis Lyders, along with the Oscar Lyders Trust, established the scholarship in 2001. It is awarded to a student majoring in vocal music and special consideration will be given to those with an interest in choral directing.

Adam Brinkman received the Lois Rose Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a studentin a field related to the medical sciences. Brinkman also received the Shirley Olson Teig Scholarship Fund. This scholarship is given to a student who has displayed academic achievement.

Ashley Brinkman received the Ethel Marie Hanson Saltou and Celia Ramsay Scholarship. It is awarded to a student majoring in education with preference given to students from Mitchell of Worth counties. Brinkman was also honored as a member of the Alpha Chi honors society.

St. Ansgar, Iowa
Justice Losse received the Luther and Eloyce Tweeten Scholarship. It is awarded to Lutheran students on the basis of academics.

Northwood, Iowa
Casey Loken received the Ronald and Darlene Groe Scholarship. It is awarded to Christian students from North Central Iowa who show academic promise and have demonstrated a determination to succeed.

Lake Mills, Iowa
Daulton Clark, Joshua Imler, and Alyse DeVries, all of Lake Mills, Iowa, have received the Maevis Adams Memorial Scholarship. Established in 2002 by James Adams in memory of his wife, the Adams Scholarship is awarded to a student who is a member of Emmons Lutheran Church, Emmons, Minn. If there are no students from this church attending Waldorf, the proceeds are awarded to a resident of Lake Mills, Iowa, or surrounding area.

Kelli Lair of Lake Mills, Iowa, received three scholarships on Wednesday: The Everett and Clara Nelson Endowed Scholarship, Carol Solomonson Palm Memorial Scholarship, and The Orval and Esther Trail Education Scholarship. The Everett and Clara Nelson Endowed Scholarship is awarded to a senior (preferred) or a junior student (Lutheran preferred) who is in pre-seminary studies, a music major or planning to pursue mission work. The Carol Solomonson Palm Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in either music or education. The Orval and Esther Trail Education Scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior majoring in education and is on the dean’s list. Lair was also honored as a member of the Alpha Chi honors society.

Thompson, Iowa
Ashlee Lentz of Thompson, Iowa, received the Brian and Lorae Current Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to two students. One will be given to a female wrestler and the other to a student who has displayed academic achievement.

Swea City, Iowa
Jacob Adams of Swea City, Iowa, received the Helen Briggs-Halverson Scholarship. It is awarded to a student with preference given to a graduate of North Kossuth or Buffalo Center High School.

Algona, Iowa
Philip Detrick of Algona, Iowa, received the Joel P. Laaveg Choir Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a male vocalist in the choir who “loves to sing, and who hopes to continue to share his love of music with others all his life.

Alpha Chi Honors Society
Emily Clausen of Forest City, Iowa; Leah Deutsch of Kanawha, Iowa; Laura Devine of Clear Lake, Iowa; Michelle Eden of Britt, Iowa; Alexander Horak of Buffalo Center, Iowa; and Tara Kingland of Lake Mills, Iowa were honored as members of the Alpha Chi honors society.
