How To Properly Store Your Cigars To Preserve Their Quality

If you’re a cigar smoker, then you know that proper storage is key to preserving the flavor and quality of your smokes. Improper storage can lead to dried out, brittle cigars that don’t taste very good. In this blog post, we will discuss the best ways to store your cigars so that they stay fresh and flavorful. We’ll also cover some common mistakes people make when storing their cigars, and how to avoid them. So read on for all the info you need on cigar storage!

Get a Cabinet Humidor

The first and most important step in storing your cigars is to invest in a good quality humidor. A humidor is a specially designed box that regulates the humidity and temperature inside, creating an environment that is ideal for storing cigars. Cigars need to be stored at around 70% relative humidity and 70 degrees Fahrenheit in order to stay fresh. If the humidity and temperature inside your humidor are too low, your cigars will dry out and become brittle. If the humidity and temperature are too high, your cigars will become moldy. There are many different types of cabinet humidor available on the market, from small desktop models that hold a few dozen cigars, to large walk-in units that can store thousands of cigars. No matter how many cigars you plan on storing, there is a humidor out there that will suit your needs.

Choose the Right Location

Once you have your humidor, it’s important to choose the right location for it. You’ll want to avoid any areas of your home that are exposed to extremes of temperature or humidity. For example, storing your humidor in a hot, sunny room will cause the cigars inside to dry out, while storing it in a cold, damp basement will make them susceptible to mold and mildew. The best location for your humidor is an area of your home that is cool, dark, and relatively humidity-free.

Fill Your Humidor With Boveda Packs

Boveda packs are small packets of dried wood chips that are used to regulate the humidity inside a humidor. They are available in a variety of different RH levels, so you can choose the one that best suits your cigars. Boveda packs are designed to be used in conjunction with a humidor, and they are the best way to ensure that your cigars are stored at the proper humidity level.

Add Your Cigars

Once you have your humidor set up and filled with Boveda packs, it’s time to add your cigars. You’ll want to arrange them in the humidor so that they are not touching each other, as this can cause them to stick together and damage the wrappers. Once you have your cigars arranged to your liking, close the lid of the humidor and let it sit for 24 hours before opening it again. This will give the Boveda packs time to adjust the humidity inside the humidor to the proper level.

Check the Humidity Regularly

Even if you’re using Boveda packs, it’s important to check the humidity level inside your humidor on a regular basis. This can be done with a hygrometer, which is a device that measures the relative humidity (RH) of an environment. You can find hygrometers at most cigar shops, or online. Simply place the hygrometer inside your humidor and check the RH level every few days. If it drops below 70%, add another Boveda pack to raise the humidity back up to where it needs to be.

Monitor the Temperature

In addition to checking the humidity, you’ll also want to monitor the temperature inside your humidor. This can be done with a thermometer, which is available at most cigar shops or online. Place the thermometer inside your humidor and check the temperature every few days. If it rises above 70 degrees Fahrenheit, move your humidor to a cooler location. If it drops below 70 degrees Fahrenheit, move your humidor to a warmer location.

Give Your Cigars a Rest

After you’ve enjoyed a cigar, it’s important to let it rest for at least 24 hours before storing it in your humidor. This will allow the cigar to rehydrate and reach its optimal flavor. If you try to store a cigar immediately after smoking it, the cigar will dry out and become harsh.

Don’t Overfill Your Humidor

It’s important to not overfill your humidor, as this can cause the cigars inside to dry out. Only fill your humidor with as many cigars as you plan on smoking within a month or two. This will ensure that your cigars are always fresh and ready to smoke.

By following these simple tips, you can ensure that your cigars are stored properly and will remain fresh for months. Thanks for reading!
