Garner Man Wins $100,000 Lottery Prize

Ronald Leerar

DES MOINES, Iowa – A Garner man wasn’t sure what to expect when he had his “Gemstone 10s” instant-scratch ticket validated, but he ended up winning a top prize of $100,000.

Ronald Leerar, 46, said when he scratched the ticket he saw a few zeros, but didn’t look close enough to see exactly what he’d won. He asked the clerk at a local retailer to validate the ticket.

“He told me, ‘Hey, Bud, you just won $100,000!’ And I just started shaking,” Leerar said.

Leerar said he definitely wasn’t expecting to be a top-prize winner.

“I didn’t suspect that much; I thought it was a thousand or ten thousand,” he said.

Leerar said he has played the Gemstone 10s ticket in the past, but only a few times. He purchased his winning ticket at Clear Lake Payless Foods, 20 South Fourth St. in Clear Lake. Leerar called his parents to tell them the good news.

“They were surprised,” he said.

Leerar, who works at S & K Pallets in Clear Lake, said he plans to invest some of his winnings as well as purchase a newer vehicle. He claimed his prize Monday at the Iowa Lottery’s regional office in Mason City.
