NORA SPRINGS — John Robert Janssen, 35, of Nora Springs, a United States military veteran remembered for his kind heart and readiness to help others, passed away Tuesday, August 4, 2026.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 13, 2026, at First United Methodist Church, 202 N. Hawkeye Avenue in Nora Springs, with Pastor Brent Hamilton officiating.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye Avenue in Nora Springs.
John was born April 16, 1991. He graduated from Central Springs High School in 2009 and then answered the call to serve his country.
He spent four years in the military and was stationed in Hawaii. After completing his service, John returned home to Nora Springs.
John worked for six years as a security officer at MercyOne. He later joined his brother-in-law Derek’s business, where he developed lasting friendships with his coworkers and became passionate about learning the heating and cooling trade.
Animals held a special place in John’s heart, particularly cats. He frequently rescued homeless cats, including expectant mothers, and made sure their kittens were fed, protected and placed with caring families. Loving homes have also been found for the four cats still in his care at the time of his death.
John enjoyed playing online games with friends and collecting a variety of memorabilia, especially items connected to Pokémon.
He was also happy to lend a hand on the family farm whenever extra help was needed. Those closest to John will remember that he could be counted upon to assist someone in need, usually accompanied by a smile.
John is survived by his parents, Susan and Mark Janssen; sisters Jennifer and Kurt Walker and Amy and Derek Pike; niece Trista Pike; nephews Henry and Logan Pike and Harrison and Tatum Walker; aunts Kathy Bledsoe and Diana and Mike Lage; uncles Mike Prather, Mike Janssen, and Terry and Bonnie Janssen; many cousins; lifelong friend Luke Peters; and his second mother, Michelle Behne.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Jack and Bonnie Prather and Bob and Thelma Janssen; uncles Steve Bledsoe and Howard Prather; aunts Jane Query, Candy Prather and Sue Janssen; an infant sister; and cousin Brandon Prather.
