MASON CITY – Mason City’s Book World store in Southbridge Mall will close and hold a liquidation sale of 20% to 40% off most inventory, the company announced.
According to Book World, Inc.:
With great sadness, we must tell you, today, that our business can no longer go on. Having worked so very hard for more than 40 years, you can well understand how devastating this is for us and everyone involved with Book World. We tried to keep Book World afloat, and to be successful, but that was not meant to be. After over 40 years since the opening of our first book store all Book World stores will be closing their doors sometime in early 2018.
The recent national shift in the retail marketplace towards e-commerce has triggered the loss of vital mall anchor stores and a downward spiral in customer counts reducing sales to a level that will no longer sustain our business.
Beginning TODAY we will begin a liquidation sale which will run until all inventory is sold in each store.
We sincerely thank all of our great customers. THANK YOU to each and every one of you!!!. For over 40 years you’ve supported your local Book World store and in the process a world of people including publishers, distributors, printers, authors, and MANY more! We are all forever grateful!
Please make every effort to continue to support your local bookstores and all other local businesses. We are truly dependent on each other!

Lets put a bowling alley in there ASAP.
If they could have just made it tell Nov 7th. All will be healed after that. Mall full, hotels and motels full, no room in any restaurant? Just 5 more days
Tells you everything you need to know which way to vote.
Nooooo! So sad to lose a book store.
What a lovely coffee shop that was next to that bookstore. Great atmosphere if one is inclined to that way of life. Books are great! Culture of the highest order was once created by books. If I had a million dollars to spend I would spend it on enlightenment in the way of a new bookstore. What a wonderful way to invest in people and the dividends lay the foundations to riches. Idealist yes. Realist most certainly. Anything is possible.
with it gone maybe we could use the space to make the hockey rink larger thus drawing more people in, haha another pipe dream, the space will probably be used for the sheriffs sale of the rest of the building.
Got to admire your positive attitude, it’s people like you that drive this city into the dirt
You dont think attitudes like that attract businesses?
The price of technology. coming soon to all areas.
You have great insight into the big picture of the future of retail sales. Books and pizza no longer need bricks and mortar, just imagine what is next. Even Wally World is looking seriously at new models and methods.
