Police investigate shooting near downtown Fort Dodge

FORT DODGE – A teen was shot in the leg in downtown Fort Dodge Thursday, and police caught two suspects after a chase.

On August 31, 2017, at approximately 4:16 PM, the Webster County Communications Center received a call in regards to shots fired in the 400 block of North 7th Street area. Callers indicated multiple gunshots had been heard. As officers with the Fort Dodge Police Department and Webster County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area, information came in indicating two males were running in the downtown area.

When officers arrived, they determined that a shooting had occurred in the 200 block of North 9th Street. Officers were able to locate the males in the downtown area at the intersection of 12th Street and Central Avenue. At that point, officers learned that these individuals were in the area of the previously reported incident. As that was occurring, officers learned that a juvenile male had been taken to Unity Point – Trinity Regional Medical Center, with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg.

During the course of the investigation, a weapon was recovered. As a result, one juvenile male was taken into custody and charged with Carrying Weapons (Aggravated Misdemeanor). However, police believe that an additional weapon was involved that has not yet been recovered. Police also say they have reason to believe this is an isolated incident, where those involved knew each other.

At this time, the Fort Dodge Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division, along with Patrol, are continuing to follow up on leads. Anyone with information on this incident, or who may have observed anything suspicious in the area around this time, is encouraged to contact the Fort Dodge Police Department.
