Police chase stolen pickup out of Rockwell; two men arrested

RURAL CERRO GORDO COUNTY – Two North Iowa men were arrested after police pursued a stolen pickup truck out of Rockwell, reaching speeds over 100 miles per hour.

On Tuesday, May 30, 2017, at about 1:34 AM, a Cerro Gordo County Deputy observed a suspicious vehicle in Rockwell. The vehicle drove away from the Deputy at a high rate of speed and a vehicle pursuit began in Rockwell, and then proceeding out of Rockwell on Pheasant Avenue. Speeds on Pheasant Avenue reached over 110 miles per hour. The truck, a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado, was stolen earlier in the evening in Oelwein, Iowa. The Deputy pursued the truck and other deputies responded to the area. The pursuit went East on 170th Street from Pheasant Avenue at speeds of approximately 100 miles per hour. At the intersection of 170th Street and Yarrow Avenue, the driver of the truck lost control and drove into the ditch. At that time, two subjects fled on foot from the truck. Deputies searched the area and a Butler County Deputy assisted with his K9 partner. After a short search, two subjects were arrested without further incident. During the theft of the truck in Oelwein, a trailer and lawn mower were also stolen. These items have not yet been recovered.

Clay Douglas Kalvig, age 29 of Klemme, was charged with the following: Eluding, a Class D Felony; Operating while under the influence, second offense, an aggravated misdemeanor; Interference with official acts, a simple misdemeanor; Driving while barred, an aggravated misdemeanor; Driving under suspension, a simple misdemeanor; Possession of drug paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor; Fail to obey a traffic control device, a simple misdemeanor.

David Michael Hurst, age 47 of Mason City, was charged with interference with official acts, a simple misdemeanor.

Further charges are pending from Oelwein Police regarding the theft of the truck, trailer, and mower. The investigation is ongoing and further charges are possible from both agencies.

The Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Department was assisted by the Butler County Sheriff’s Office K9.

In January of this year, Kalvig allegedly broke into a garage near Rockford and drove the owner’s pickup through the garage door during a burglary attempt.  He faces a number of felony charges in connection to that incident, and is set for a plea hearing on June 12.
