A pregnant horse struggles in mud for as long as 3 days before being euthanized Tuesday afternoon. The owner was arrested and charged with animal neglect.

MASON CITY – An injured horse was euthanized Tuesday about forty-five hours after the first complaint to law enforcement about its condition.

Ralph Stricker was informed Sunday evening that one of his horses was either sick or hurt. He said he would check on it.

Monday, it was confirmed by Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s office that they were keeping an eye on the horse. She was being seen by a veterinarian, being fed, given water and being kept warm.

By Tuesday morning, around 9:00 am, this same horse, which was pregnant, was still lying in the field, exposed to the cold with no shelter, and could not get up to walk. She was laying on her side at first, but when she tried to move, she had to drag herself by her front legs.

Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Deputy Brian Koob said, “I do believe that the horse is suffering. We either need to help the horse or she needs to be put down. There are not any charges yet. We have been out to this farm numerous times, between 50-75 calls have came in about animal neglect. We are legally bound because the owner will not give up owners rights. The Humane Society of North Iowa has been contacted and a horse rescue has been notified.”

Monte Neubauer, neighbor of Stricker’s, approached onlookers in an aggressive manner at the scene Tuesday who were waiting for law enforcement to take action. Neubauer is said to be a helper on Stricker’s farm.

I do agree that this was terrible for those of you who do not own livestock to see, but sometimes there is nothing you can do. The only reason this is getting so much publicity is because these animals were by a blacktop road. If he would have lived on gravel no one would have said boo about it. This is a horse. What do you think happens to horse in the wild when this happens? They just lay there until they die. It is unfortunate that he could not care for the horse and he should get rid of the rest of his animals. Horses live outside in the winter. They are not supposed to be covered because this messes with they natural ability to adapt to cold weather. Until you educate yourselves on livestock and horses do not throw stones. I know that many of you will get upset over this post but treating a horse is slightly different than treating your lap dog.

Saying “it’s a horse, it’s livestock, animals do this in the country” are all excuses for bad animal care. ALL animals feel discomfort and pain. This horse or asny animal in distress should be brought into some sort of shelter and to dry ground and out of inclement weather. In the wild there is no one to rescue them so they have no choice but to die a slow death.
This man needs the Human Services to step in and see that his mental health and physical needs are taken care of. Obviously family and friends aren’t getting the job done.

Please tell me what method you would use to move that horse into a barn or shed. Apparently even the humane society doesn’t have the equipment to do that safely and humanely.

The Intelligent method that should of been used when a horse is pregnant is to separate her from the other horses in a different enclosure with shelter. She should of NEVER been allowed to roam until she had the baby. Now both are dead! SHAME

Hi Matt Im just wondering if you could interview Mr Stricker or Monte neubaure and really find out what took place with this horse? To me the horse even with the bad hips truley wants to live as you can see when the deputies are with it it wants their help. This is such a sad thing to see and I feel for the deputies and anyone else that had to deal with this. I want some answers as to what took place. why cant we have in our area a animal cop like we see on tv to go in and rescue animals that need help.. Iwould sign in a heartbeat to heapl out.

Maybe it’s “none of your business.”

All of you her are defending Mr. Stricker, pleast check the public record on Iowa Courts Online. Mr. Stricker has been charged with either Livestock Neglect, Animal Neglect, or Animal Cruelty 10 times since 2007. 3 of those were rolled into other charges and dismissed and 2 are still pending. This is not someone who was trying to do his best and, oh well… This is a serious, repeat offender who should not be allowed to have animals. He has already served time in jail and paid multiple fines because he CANNOT care for his animals. Apparently this did not make an impression on him. Maybe it is time for a couple of months in jail to try to get through to him.

It amazes me how many of you don’t think this horse should have been given a chance to live. It just might have had something wrong that treatment may have helped. Do you give up just because of the circumstances or what the public might think? Miracles do happen.

#1. In our area, most large animal veterinarians also practice on small animals and have appointments all day long. A veterinarian probably was not available to go to Mr. Stricker’s until late Monday.
#2. The horse couldn’t move its rear legs. Sometimes medications can improve this problem. Miracles do happen. Wouldn’t you want to at least give your horse a chance?
#3. The horse was outside in the cold and mud. Yes, that’s the pits. It sucks for the horse and for the people who watch it and think it’s abuse. But sometimes if you want a pet to live, you do what you can to keep it comfortable to give it a long shot to recover. The fact it’s an outdoor animal makes it harder to give it the time it needs. When it didn’t respond, he did the right thing. I’m sure it broke his heart. All you see is a horse struggling. I see a man losing a beloved pet.

Mr. Stricker did call a veterinarian and did appear to be trying to take care of the horse. His other horses appear to be well-cared for. I think your outrage is over the top. If he didn’t care emotionally about this horse, he would have put her down immediately. He was bonded to this animal and was hoping to save her. And I don’t think it was about money. I think he probably kept the offspring because he loved them. His love of animals is probably why he refuses to leave the farm and go to a care facility. He can’t imagine life without them.

Mr Stricker did not want any Vet to care for this Horse he wanted HIS Vet which at the time his Vet wasn’t available. A passerby offered to pay the cost to put the horse down he turned that offer down.
Do you really think mr stricker was heart broken Katie? He allowed his horse to suffer for 3 days.
If he was heart broken at all it was probably because he lost money BREEDING.
What about the dead horse prior to this one that was frozen to the ground and a witness saw them pulling the dead horse across their field? WHERE is this horse?
I think the Sheriff needs to search his property because I have a bad feeling there are more dead/sick animals on his property.

I heard the deputy say on the video that they had only been called to this farm for animals on the roadway and not for abuse. I also heard her say the horse went down on Sunday night and the horse was put down Tuesday afternoon. So how did it suffer for 3 days? That is less than 2 days and she was given less than 24 hours to respond to treatment by the vet.

I’m glad to hear that someone offered to pay for a veterinarian to come out. That was very neighborly and I’m sorry to hear he refused, but again, he did not want to put her down, he wanted her treated by his own vet.

Did anyone offer to help haul straw out to put around her to soak up the mud? Did anyone offer to keep her covered for him? Would he have turned down that kindness if it had been offered without criticism? I heard people standing out in the cold screaming and crying about the poor horse, but did anyone actually try to help Mr. Stricker or the horse by offering to keep her comfortable without attacking him personally?

What’s really sad is that because this was such a large animal outside in the winter, veterinary medicine had no chance to work for her. She may have been irreversibly injured, but we’ll never know.

Money was the reason? Just how much do horses sell for now? Not a whole lot unless they are some fancy breed.

I don’t know much about the other dead horse that was frozen to the ground. I guess I don’t know how people dispose of large animals that die in the winter.

It should be up to the State Department of Agriculture, Division of Animal Welfare, as to how abusive this case was. Let them settle it and decide if his farm should be searched.

Are u serious..Is this northiowamugshots? because I hear the phrase “if you don’t know tho whole story”, what more is there to know? Tell me please because if I’m wrong there is NOT another part to this story as I see it.Oh wait he’s old, give me a brake I’m frickin old to but you don’t see my animal’s froze to the ground and laying like that for3 days.and if Monte is so quick to defend him why didnt you get yr ass out there and help him, instead you’d rather attack nit, good thing you at the last minute got some sence, because thats my family. This is an outrage there’s enough b.s. going on in mason city and now animal abuse .How did the legs on that horse get injured? Yo hired hand can you answer that for us??? maybe should charge him also. This is the sickest thing I’ve seen yet.Maybe this man should give up these animal’s, o wait I guess there’s no money in that is there, the horse was pregnut.I just don’t even have the words to describe the kind of monster you are buddy, can I plz put yr ass out to pasture, maybe u should get the same treatment you gave that horse.you are a pathetic piece of shit. And what happened to the other horse that u had to pull from the frozen ground and it broke in half where’s that horse buried in yr yard maybe..Good job to Matt and his staff u guys rock.and the officers that were there to assist.now let’s take action on this Iraqi its gonna happen again..Somebody’s watching you.

Matt sorry for what I sad but being a person that cares alot about animals this makes me sick, I know what I said was wrong and myself along with many others our hope is that these 2 are punished to the fullest and I do mean what I said. If our country wasnt full of bleeding hearts things like this would not happen as you would know what was in store for you when judgement day came. Thank You

This is a very sad deal for everyone involved and I wish people new the WHOLE story instead of the picture this p.o.s site and other news outlets portray.

I notice:

02171 AGCR011829 ST V NEUBAUER, MONTE D (D21079514) NEUBAUER, MONTE DEAN 01/11/1963 DEFENDANT

ECT.

They are all from 10/11/1963. While this fellow must have done something to have these, they are all back in 1963.

What ever happened to a man paying his debt to society and not having it held against you forever.

If this is the way we are going to treat each other then what incentive to people have to change and become a productive member of society?

I’m guessing 01/11/1963 is his date of birth?

You are right that is his date of birth. I went online and many of these were dismissed and many were guilty by default.

I am guessing he just didn’t show up in court. I wonder if they are parking tickets or what. They must not be to serious to have that many and not be locked up.

At any rate they all appear several years old and don’t have anything to do with this horse.

Do you suppose a child molester should get a clean slate every time they get out of prison?! Once a sicko always a sicko. Once an animal abuser ALWAYS an animal abuser. I hope he gets a similar demise!

For f*ck’s sake…yeah, he committed every crime in his life on that same day in 1963. Just when I think people cant get any dumber, some idiot like you goes and proves me wrong.

Horses are intelligent, beautiful, majestic beings…having the means to own them is a privilege, just as it is to own ANY animal. If you’re going to have them, you damn sure better be able to take care of them.

This isn’t the first time that Mr. Stricker has had problems taking care of his animals, how sad. Where’s PETA, when you really need them….

It looks as if even Monty has been given a chance or two.

Could someone contact the vet that was involved and get a report on the “actual” condition of the horse.

How did the horse get injured? If the horse was sick, then what was the nature of the horse’s sickness?

Was it impossible to transport the horse and get it veterinary care in such a way to heal the animal?

Is it possible that the owner of the horses may be suffering from dementia? Mr. Stricker should have family I hope. When you can’t talk sense to a fellow it is usually a sign of deeper problems.

Also, there seem to be a lot of people that are very emotional over this incident. While I would never, ever want to see an animal harmed in any way, it does appear that folks have become overly emotional in an mentally unhealthy manor due to this incident.

While Mr. Stricker is certainly not in the right here I don’t think people wanting him shot or putting him out in the cold makes them any better then Mr. Stricker. That in and of itself is sic.

FROM NIT STAFF: Please keep comments clean.

FROM NIT STAFF: Please, no threats against the arrested party nor anyone associated with him. He is innocent until proven guilty, and we do not allow threats here on NIT.

COMMENT REMOVED.

Common knowledge. People who mistreat animals and or torture them are serial killers in training. This guy needs to be watched very carefully.

That is not the case here. No killer in training. imo. Owner is elderly. I am sure he will be watched by proper authority. I’m fairly certain he is not a threat to the community. And I’m equaly sure the animals are being watched over also.

Nice job Matt of being respectfull to the Deputy you interviewed!
This is the same place where a calf was hit by a car one night and the dead carcass layed in the ditch for weeks. Don’t know if the owner ever took care of it or if mother nature did?
WTF!!! What is the owner responsible for? Isn’t there some law about disposal of dead livestock?

Put the ones responsible out in the cold and let them suffer like they let this horse did. Piece of ##### that they are. Hang them out to dry. No sympathy for people who treat innocent animals like this. rot in HELL!

It is very hard to watch, I am a great animal lover, but please, we have only heard 1 side of the story! Was the animal under vet care? If it was, what was the vets recomendations? Maybe it was a wait and see kind of thing.
I have had to put down many animals, its very hard, maybe owner just was not convienced animal could not get better? Just saying. Again, nobody loves animals more than me, it tugs at your heart. I will reserve judgement tell I know more.

Are you kidding me?? What more proof do you need? The Photos and Video show the proof. The article left out the part about a different horse that was frozen to the ground and the striker’s used a truck to pull it across their field and it tore the horse in half!! Where is this other dead horse at?
This man needs his animals taken away NOW.

Are you kidding? I’m sure the vet recomedation would be to get the horse out of waist high mud. If the pregnant horse was needing euthanisation, I bet the bet would have said “Let’s give her a shot” not “let’s let her wallow, pregnant, unaided, in freezing mud”.

That’s right, HIS VET allowed this horse to lay there and suffer. He gave the horse some medicine Sunday or Monday to see if it will get up on its own. NO VET in their right mind would EVER allow this. These words came right out of the farmhands mouth. The farmhand would NOT allow anyone (besides the sheriff of course) to help,or at least help console the horse. Onlookers, KIMT, NIT, Photographers offered their help that day their hands were tied because of the farmhand.
I’m sure it was frustrating!

Also, As you can see by the video that the farmhand wanted to attack NIT two of the people who offered their help.

How many vets are ok with an animal being mired in freezing mud?

You are correct about only knowing one side of the story. The owner is 89 years old and in total denial that he is too old to care for animals! He can barely walk, but won’t give up his farm animals! I wish someone would take away his rights to any animals, and wish he would give in to living in some sort of nursing home! It is sad indeed!

Considering this is a 2nd event involving him & animals, I have confidense the proper authority will assure it doesn’t happen again.

Ive had horses for over 40 years and there is not treatment for ANY illness that makes it suitable to leave a horse laying out in the frozen mud for 3 days! If the horse was savable it would have been Sunday when it went down. This guy needs to be in jail, or maybe a bad nursing home that will treat him like he treated his animals!

I think good ol PETA needs to pay these two a visit.

It would be a case for HSUS.

I am making this my mission in life….to see that these men NEVER have horses or any other animal again. This is the most disturbing thing i have seen! I know literally all the horse people in this town. Please…anyone who wants to ban together and make sure these men pay for this horrible cruelty….contact me. Write back on this site….we can form a group against this!

Count me in!

Rest assured the Sheriff’s office and anyone who is concerned about the animals and Mr. Stricker’s mental/physical health will take care of the matter. It’s their job to.
No need for a witch hunt. Count me out.

sick..

I guess I have a question. Why don’t a group of people go to this gentleman’s home during the day and see what he has to say. Sometimes people need to learn lessons the hard way. Include Mr.Neubauer in the teaching. He seems like a tough guy.

Whats the matter with people? Laws need to make this guy an example and give him the toughest fines and punisment for this….this can not be tolerated….. God bless the folks who cared enough to stick up for this animal and try to get the horse help…

Ahh good ol Monte the tweeker Neubauer. When would he have time to take care of animals in between commiting felonies?

Guy should get a bullet to the head. End of story. I have horses, it’s not that hard to take good care of horses. I think he should have the rights to ALL of his horses given up, and not be allowed to have any more in the future.
