WEST DES MOINES – An Iowa man who had kids in his car faces multiple charges after he fought a plain-clothes police officer who stopped him for drunk driving.

Officer Barry Graham, a West Des Moines Police Officer of four years and a member of the Community Resource Unit was injured on January 4th, 2017 at approximately 5:00 PM. His injuries are non-life threatening and he has been released from the hospital after treatment. Officer Graham has normal duties as a non-uniformed officer working in a community outreach function specifically working with multi-family dwellings.

While driving home in his personal vehicle in civilian clothing, Officer Graham observed what he believed to be a threat to public safety. He immediately called in to Westcom Dispatch Center and requested a uniformed officer be present to take action. Officer Graham presented his badge and identified himself as a police officer several times while attempting to stop the suspect, 30-year-old Jevon Polo of West Des Moines. Mr. Polo ignored Officer Graham’s request and eventually exited his vehicle attacking officer Graham, causing injury. Two uniformed patrol officers arrived shortly after the attack and apprehended Polo.

Two dependent children were present in Polo’s vehicle during the incident. The children are unharmed and were released to a family member.

Jevon Polo will be charged with the following:

Assault on a Police Officer Causing Injury
OWI 1st Offense
Child Endangerment
Open Container of Alcoholic Beverage in a Motor Vehicle

POLO, JEVON WRANDELL

Hey Anonymous, maybe he got him stopped before he ran into you and injuried/killed you or the kids. You must get a lot of tickets to have such a opinion. You weren’t there

No tickets… Just a understanding of safety for civilians from abuse of power from corrupt officers and the safety of our dedicated officers. Because that’s why procedures are put in place. Be safe out there & follow the rules.

Presented his badge while trying to pull him over in a non police vehicle without a uniform… Why was backup not there when the off duty officer approached the man. Sounds like the police need to review their procedures.
