Mason City man starts New Year with $50,000 lottery prize

CLIVE, Iowa – A Mason City man said he was excited to find out that he won $5,000 on a holiday scratch ticket. However, after a friend double-checked his work he ended up winning a lot more than that.

David Paulson claimed one of the $50,000 top prizes available in the lottery’s “$50,000 Holiday Super Crossword” scratch game.

The 60-year-old said he bought his winning ticket on Christmas Eve at Yesway, 1920 S. Federal Drive in Mason City on his way to a friend’s holiday party. He scratched off his ticket at the party and had his friend verify that he had won.

“I’m counting. I thought I had nine words so it was $5,000,” Paulson told lottery employees Tuesday as he claimed his prize at the lottery’s regional office in Mason City. “He counted. He said, ‘Nope. You have 10 words; I think that’s $50,000!’”

After Paulson got his winning ticket confirmed at a local convenience store, he was sure that he had won.

Paulson, who works at an automobile parts store in Mason City, said he plans to buy a newer pickup truck with his winnings.

The $50,000 Holiday Super Crossword ticket was a $5 scratch game.
