NEW YORK – Donald Trump has defeated Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election for President of the United States.
Hillary Clinton called Donald Trump on the phone to concede the election. Trump declared victory and said “I pledge to every citizen of our land that I will be president for all Americans. Ours was not a campaign but rather an incredible and great movement, made up of millions of hardworking men and women who love their country and want a better, brighter future for themselves and for their family.”
As of early Wednesday, Trump had 289 electoral votes, well above the 270 needed for victory. Clinton had 218 with a few states left to turn in final results. Trump scored crucial wins in Florida, Ohio, North Carolina, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania. He might still get Michigan. He did win Iowa, as well.
Trump will meet with President Barack Obama Thursday to begin working on the transition of government.
It appears at this time that the Republican Party will control both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
