URBANDALE, IOWA – Two police officers have died after being shot early Wednesday morning in the Des Moines metro area.
On Wednesday, November 2, 2016, at approximately 1:06 AM, Urbandale officers responded to investigate a report of shots fired in the area of 70th and Aurora. The first officers to arrive found an Urbandale Police Department police officer who had been shot.
Des Moines Police Department officers responded to assist. At approximately 1:26 AM, a Des Moines Police Department police officer was found shot at the intersection of Merle Hay Road and Sheridan Drive.
Both officers are deceased. The shootings appear to have been ambush-style attacks. Suspect information is being developed at this time.
The Des Moines and Urbandale Police Departments have identified a suspect in the murder of two police officers this morning.
Urbandale resident Scott Michael Greene, age 46, was sought by investigators and later Wednesday was caught.
Governor Terry Branstad’s office released a statement after the incident.
“The governor and lt. governor have been alerted to the attacks on law enforcement this morning. Shortly after the shootings, our office was briefed by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) on the shootings. DPS is working hand in hand with local law enforcement in the investigation. We will continue monitoring and working with law enforcement in the interest of public safety.
An attack on public safety officers is an attack on the public safety of all Iowans. We call on Iowans to support our law enforcement officials in bringing this suspect to justice. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the police officers who were tragically killed in the line of duty as well as the officers who continue to put themselves in harm’s way.”
Gov. Branstad released further statements today expressing sorrow for the two police officers who were murdered earlier this morning and praised state and local officials for their actions in apprehending the suspect.
“Earlier this morning, like Iowans across our state, I woke to the tragic news of the horrific murders of Sgt. Beminio and Officer Martin. I struggle to fully express the sorrow and sadness I feel for the families of our fallen officers, their departments, and their communities. The thoughts and prayers of Chris and I go out to the families of these officers and to those who served beside them.
I am thankful for the swift arrest of the suspect and the joint efforts of state and local officials to make the arrest possible. I have asked the Department of Public Safety to assist local officials with the investigation if needed. State public safety officials stand ready to see justice served and safety maintained.
As I said this morning, an attack on our public safety officers is an attack on the public safety of all Iowans. Our state and our law enforcement community are hurting right now. Today is a time for mourning. Today is also a time to come together, as Iowans always do, in support of these fallen officers, their families, and all those working to protect and serve in our state.”

And here’s a case that illustrates why it’s impossible to stop mentally agitated persons from committing acts of violence with a firearm. I’m not sure about the shooter’s legal status to own a firearm, but something tells me the guy was going to find a gun regardless of whether he was legally able to do so. The witch hunt against persons deemed mentally ill pales in comparison to persons considered “normal” who ‘crack’ and commit acts of murder using guns. It’s ridiculous to try and single out persons to discriminate against, when violence could occur by anyone at anytime. A man could find his wife in bed with a stranger, grab his gun and kill her on the spot, yet 10 minutes prior be considered completely normal. Anger, jealousy, and sudden provocation can create violent impulses in anyone…including the Pope. Including police officers and judges as well. No one is immune from the potential to commit violence, and the State’s reliance on their bogus “minority report” prediction system is bullshit.

This guy killing these officers has nothing to do with the injustices perpetrated by police officers against unarmed civilians in recent years. This guy took revenge because he’a racist and felt slighted. I watched his YouTube video confrontation with police at the football game. He was angry because police wouldn’t allow him to identify the person he said attacked him and took his flag. I’m. It sure how that works on school property…whether it is considered public or private. In this case I side with the police officers and want to extend my condolences. This was unjustified and has no place in the annals of justice and political struggle. It is an action which will be historically condemned. I am a fair man, and I give credit where credit is due, and similarly I condemn when condemnation is due.
