This year’s Great Race Grand Marshall, competitive driver and TV star Jessi Combs and her navigator/co-host Patrick McIntyre, will compete in the rally for an episode of Autoblog’s “The List: 1001 Car Things to do Before You Die.”

The Great Race, the world’s premiere vintage automobile rally, will bring 120 of the world’s finest collector cars to Mason City, Iowa – hosting the Great Race for lunch in East Park as part of the city’s annual Cannonball Day Celebration. The cars will arrive starting at 1:10 p.m. at one-minute intervals for two hours.

At each Great Race stop, spectators are welcome to visit with participants and get an up close and personal view of these phenomenal antique cars.

“When the Great Race pulls into a city it becomes an instant festival,” Race Director Jeff Stumb said. “Last year we had three overnight stops with more than 10,000 spectators at each stop. A total of 250,000 people saw the Great Race and all the historic cars participating during the weeklong event.”

Competitors in this year’s race will be traveling a total of 2,400 miles over parts oThe Great Race_003f the famous Lincoln Highway, crossing six states – California, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Iowa and Illinois – in addition to a side trip to South Dakota to see Mount Rushmore and the Badlands. Participants will cross the finish line on June 26thin Moline, Illinois, on the banks of the Mississippi River.

The Great Race, which was founded 33 years ago, is not a speed race, but a time/speed/distance rally. The vehicles, each with a driver and navigator, are given precise instructions and are allowed only the bare essentials – pens, pencils, race tables, instructions, Great Race-sanctioned maps, a stopwatch and a standard radio with AM/FM only. The most important rule on this journey is no electronics – that means no cell phones, GPS, laptops, tablets, etc.

Cars built in 1972 and earlier are eligible, with most entries having been manufactured before World War II. A 1916 Hudson Indy Racer, a 1916 Hudson Four Passenger Speedster, a 1916 Chevrolet Phaeton, a 1917 Peerless Racer, and a chain-driven 1918 American LaFrance Speedster are the oldest cars participating in this year’s event. The winner of the Great Race will receive $50,000 of the $150,000 total purse.

The event’s main sponsors are Hemmings Motor News, Hagerty, Coker Tire, Reliable Carriers, and Toyota.
