Woman found dead in Iowa jail cell of asphyxiation

investigateANAMOSA – A female inmate was found dead in a jail cell in Anamosa, Iowa and an investigation into her death continues.

According to the Jones County Sheriff’s Office, on March 21, 2015 at about 10:30 AM, a female inmate was discovered unresponsive in a Jones county jail cell as routine checks were being conducted. Resuscitation was attempted, but the woman soon died. She has been identified as 41-year-old Tana Lekin of Bater, Arkansas. She had been arrested by Anamosa police in the early morning hours of March 21, charged with second degree burglary, possession of burglar’s tools, impersonating an officer, interference with official acts, fifth degree criminal mischief and public intoxication.

The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation conducted an investigation into Lekin’s death, and an autopsy was conducted in Ankeny. The cause of her death was determined to be asphyxiation caused by an article of clothing. There was no one else in her cell at the time of death. Toxicology results are not due in for several week.s
