WASHINGTON – U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) today awarded nearly $1.8 billion to public housing authorities (PHA) in all 50 states, as well as the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The funding will allow agencies to make major large-scale improvements to their public housing units.
Iowa will receive $4,586,250.
These grants are provided through HUD’s Capital Fund Program, which offers annual funding to approximately 3,100 public housing authorities (PHA) to build, repair, renovate and/or modernize the public housing in their communities. These housing authorities use the funding to do large-scale improvements such as replacing roofs or making energy-efficient upgrades to replace old plumbing and electrical systems.
“Every American deserves a place to call home where they can successfully raise their kids, enhance their financial security and build a better life,” said HUD Secretary Julián Castro. “Through this funding, HUD is committed to strengthening our nation’s affordable housing units and to providing folks with the springboard they need to succeed.”
Hopefully this money will go to home owners that take pride in their homes and keep them clean and tidy. As opposed to some low life renters that don’t give a rats ass what the building that they live in looks like. You know the ones that sleep all day only to get up to see if the check has come. Then party all night, throw their garbage and beer cans in the front yard for all to see. NIT’s had some pictures of these places, but we all know where their at. All money down the drain.
I agree Allen, I have a HUD rental house across the street from me. All the houses on our street have nice, well kept properties but this one HUD house. They rent the place, spread their trash around and then leave in the middle of the night to let the landlord clean up the mess after them. (This has happened 5 times in the last 3 years in this house across the street from me.) This money would be better spent for a Habitat home where they could own the house and take some pride in ownership.
@John-I too have one next door. He throws his garbage everywhere, doesn’t mow his grass in the summer, doesn’t shovel in the winter. Is to cheap to pay for garbage pick up so he stores it in the garage. Then when it warms up the stink is unbearable. All the neighbors watch the drug deals going down all the time. But yet he has rent subsidy, heat assistance and lots of food stamps all paid for by the taxpayers.
