DES MOINES – An appeal by a Mason City man in a kidnapping case has been denied by the Iowa Court of Appeals.
Michael Winters, age 60 and formerly of Mason City until he was incarcerated in the Fort Dodge Correctional Facility, appealed a district court’s denial of his application for post conviction relief in a second degree kidnapping case.
Winters appealed from the denial of his application for postconviction relief contending plea counsel was ineffective. The postconviction court found Winters failed to show any evidence that plea counsel was ineffective in any way and did not prove any way he was prejudiced.
Winters nabbed a woman from her Mason City home in 2010, while displaying a gun, and then took her to another home in Rockford, before later setting her free.
Winters is scheduled for release in 2031.
