Man battling child endangerment charge serves time in CG jail

MASON CITY – A man who is battling a charge of child endangerment in a nearby North Iowa county pled guilty to a drunk driving charge Thursday in Cerro Gordo county court and served his sentence.

Thomas Lee VanderPlaats, age 28, entered a written plea of guilty Thursday to first offense operating while intoxicated. He had been pulled over on April 16 by Iowa State Patrol. Judge Annette Boehlje sentenced him to two days in jail and a $1,250 fine. He finished serving his jail sentence Friday and was released. He owes $2,005.50 in fines and court fees. A charge of possession of drug paraphernalia was dismissed.

VanderPlaats and 42-year-old Stacie Hurlburt, both of Swea City, are awaiting court dates in Kossuth county on charges of child endangerment. Both have pled not guilty. VanderPlaats awaits a September 2 pre-trial conference.

That’s not all the trouble VanderPlaats is facing.

He also stands accused of felony methamphetamine and other drug charges, also in Kossuth county. He’ll address those charges on September 2 at the same pre-trial conference. He has pled not guilty.

On Tuesday, Vanderplaats had his case continued until September 2, 2014, when a pre-trial conference is scheduled. Hurbert has no court date set, records show.

Both suspects pled not guilty in February.
