UPDATE: Charles City police shoot dog near elementary school

JIXXER

CHARLES CITY – A dog was shot and killed Monday in Charles City by a police officer near an elementary school.  UPDATE:

The owner of the dog that was shot told NIT Wednesday that Charles City police not only shot her dog, but cited her with two violations connected with the incident.

Danielle Tiemessen, the owner of “Jixxer” said that police “told me to come in to retrieve his collars and when I did (on Tuesday) they presented me with two tickets, one for “vicious animal” & one for “animal at large” before I left the pd the chief decided not to give me the “vicious animal” ticket but made me sign the “animal at large” ticket but told me he was going to talk to either the district attorney or county attorney I can’t remember which one to see if he could get that one dropped too so he told me to call him back today to find out if they dropped it. When I spoke with the chief this afternoon he told me the ticket of “animal at large” will stand because of all the attention towards it he didn’t want it to look as though his officer did anything wrong.”

According to the Charles City Police Department, at 2:44 PM Monday, the police department took a report of a dog running loose in the area of the 1400 block of North Grand Avenue, near Washington Elementary school. Police reported that the caller who reported the dog wa “concerned about children getting released from school at the time.” A police officer located the dog off school property, police said, and the dog “acted aggressively” toward the officer, leading the officer to shoot the dog, killing it.

According to a source, the dog, named “Jixxer” belonged to Danielle Tiemessen of New Hampton. She wrote on Facebook late Tuesday that the dog, an older pit/boxer, “was my best friend. I wish the situation had been different, since finding out this morning I’ve done nothing but cry, my three year old doesn’t understand why he won’t be coming home, hopefully one day he will understand, because I sure don’t.  He should be home with me right now because he NEVER should have been shot and killed in the first place.”

A woman who claimed to be nearby said she saw the shooting take place.

“I was there and this was un called for,” said Tabetha Nicole Barnish. “The shots scared me. Let alone I seen the dog. Im sure there was a way to take care of this other then this.. it took 2 shots to kill the dog.. and they were not back to back.”
