Spanking: How much is too much?

NIT – All-time great Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has been charged with a felony for beating his four-year-old son with a tree branch, leaving bloody marks across his body.  He turned himself in and sat out Sunday’s loss to the Patriots.  He’ll have his day in court.

The incident and subsequent charge have ignited a national debate on corporal punishment: How much – if any – physical discipline is allowable in today’s American society?

Some say that since they grew up with spankings, slaps, beatings, it is OK and just part of raising a child. Some may remember the punishment of going into the backyard to pick out the very switch that would be used to deliver a beating.

Others say that this type of discipline is totally unacceptable – especially in light of today’s hyper-sensitive, politically-corrrect culture – and is now criminal behavior and parents or caregivers who serve up this kind treatment should be prosecuted.

What is your opinion. Should corporal punishment be completely outlawed?  Or, should some level of spanking or other physical consequences be allowable under law for parents who want to discipline a child?
