Area cyclists put on Fifth Annual Scavenger Hunt to help food bank and Humane Society

MASON CITY – Cyclists in North Iowa have organized a local event – called “Cranksgiving” – to coincide with a national movement to raise donations for food bank and Humane Society.

The word “Cranksgiving” has been synonymous with an exciting activity of raising awareness of need, and food items for food banks and pet shelters across the nation. A group of cyclists are putting on the second annual, local version of Cranksgiving to help benefit the Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank and the Humane Society of North Iowa in Mason City.

The Mason City Cranksgiving event will take place on Saturday, November 9th at 11:00am. Cyclists will meet at Lorado’s Bar and Grill on the Southbridge Plaza, aided by their bikes, a bag, and a bike lock. Cyclists are asked to bring about $20 in cash or credit/debit cards to be used in the purchase of items to be donated. Registration will begin at 10:00am with the ride starting at 11:00am. Anyone not interested in riding are always welcome to bring a donation, and watch the festivities.

The riders will be given a mystery shopping list that they will have to follow in buying selected items at different Mason City grocery stores. The riders will carry the items with them, and converge back at Lorados to see who accomplished the task the quickest. All items and cash donations will be given the Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank and the Humane Society. The past four years events raised over 2,000 pounds of food and $1,500 in cash donations.

Cranksgiving is considered a bike ride, food drive, and scavenger hunt all wrapped up in one great event. The event will go on regardless of foul weather.
