MASON CITY – Sunday morning at about 8:23 AM, an employee of Kmart, 2006 4th S.W. Mason City called the Mason City Police Department to report a theft in progress. The employee advised a male subject ran out of the store with a 32 inch television, put it in the back of a Dodge Dakota pickup and fled the area on foot. The pickup driven by another subject also fled the scene.
At 8:34 a.m. the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a citizen that a Dodge Dakota pickup just collided with them and left the scene. This occurred at 285th and Mallard.
The Iowa State Patrol airplane located the vehicle northwest of Mason City. The airplane followed the pickup until other State Patrol Units and a Worth County Deputy stopped the vehicle just north of 450th and Wheelerwood, 1 mile south of Diamond Jo’s Casino. Three subjects were located in the pickup. Iowa State Troopers brought the subjects back to the Cerro Gordo County Jail where they were interviewed and one subject was charged. Jacob Daniel Johnson age 24 of Northwood was charged with 3rd Degree Theft, Possession of Controlled Substance (Meth), Possession of Controlled Substance (Marijuana), Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Leaving the scene of a Personal Injury Accident and other traffic charges.
During the investigation, the identity of the male who fled on foot from Kmart was found to be Tanner James Haugh age 18 of Mason City. He was later found at a residence in Mason City and arrested and charged with 4th degree Theft.
Both subjects are being held at the Cerro Gordo County Jail. Johnson has a $2,000 bond and Haugh $1,000 bond.
Mason City Police were assisted by Iowa State Patrol, Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office and the Worth County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Mason City Fire Department.

Why does your headline say “robbing” when this is a theft? There is a difference between the two charges per the Iowa Code. It looks like the penalties for “robbing” are longer than for theft.
